Grimoald I (616-662), called the Elder (in French, Grimaud) was the Mayor of the Palace of Austrasia from 643 to 656.
Grimoald served under the Merovingian kings Clovis II and Clotaire III.

Grimoald I of Benevento - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 662, after being called to assist King Godepert in a war with his brother King Perctarit, Grimoald gave Benevento to his eldest son Romuald (662-677) and, removing the fraternal impediments to his kingship with the aid of Duke Garibald of Turin, assassinated Godepert and forced Perctarit to flee.
Grimoald himself took Forlì, in the north, from the Greeks and razed Oderzo (but did not take it), where his brothers had been murdered years before.
Grimoald tracked down Lupus' aspiring son Arnefrit, and his Slav allies, and defeated him at Nimis.

Perctarit was overthrown by Grimoald, son of Gisulf, duke of Friuli and Benevento since 647.
Grimoald managed to regain control over the duchies and deflected the late attempt of the Byzantine emperor Constans II to conquer southern Italy.
At Grimoald's death in 671 Perctarit returned and promoted tolerance between Arians and Catholics, but he could not defeat the Arian party, led by Arachi, duke of Trento, who submitted only to his son, the filo-Catholic Cunipert.

Grimoald also worked as the superior of our communities in Heerlen and Helmond, where he fulfilled the difficult task of closing the communities because of the ageing of the brothers.

Grimoald again fell, and Tafo was now obliged to leave him to his fate, the fierce pursuers being too near to permit him either to kill or save the unlucky boy.
Grimoald was no sooner fully convinced of the truth of what had been told him than he slew his supposed enemy, deeming it necessary to save his own life.
Grimoald discovered the stratagem of the faithful fellow, but, instead of punishing him for it, he sought to reward him, attempting to attach him to his own service as one whose fidelity would make him valuable to any master.

Dagobert II - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Arnulfing mayor of the Austrasian palace, Grimoald the Elder, the son of Pippin of Landen, and Dagobert's guardian, had had his son Childebert adopted by Sigebert, who was at the time still childless.
When Sigebert died in 656, Grimoald seized the throne for his own son and had Dagobert tonsured.
She may have cooperated with Grimoald to set up Childebert the Adopted; later she hoped by marrying her daughter Bilichild to Childeric II to keep the eventual Austrasian heir in her bloodline.

Hearing of her plans, Corbinian fled to Meran, where he lived in semi-exile until Grimoald, who had rejoined Biltrudis, was killed in battle and Biltrudis captured by the Franks.

On his return homewards, however, preaching as he went, he came to Meran-Merano in South Tyrol, where he was induced by messengers of Grimoald, the Frankish duke of Bavaria, to go as an evangelist to Bavaria.
Corbinian, soon after settling, denounced as incestuous the marriage of Grimoald to his brother's widow, after the duke's repentance and relapse.

But Taso and Romoald, Gisulfs oldest sons escaped, lucky; and because they considered Grimoald, their youngest brother, too small still, a Ross to mount, then they, thought it would be better that he would die than in shank would fall, and wanted to kill him.
And the speer already was against the boy raised, there called Grimoald with tears: "do not kill me, because I can hold myself on that horses." Its brother seized it with the arm and set him on the bare back of a horse; the boy seized the zuegel and followed its brothers.
The boy was beautifully yellow from education, shining from eyes and from hair; when the Hunne led back it into the camp, he pulled his sword unexpectedly and met the enemy that he fell of horses to soil.

On learning of the siege he despatched a trusty friend and officer, Sesuald by name, with some troops, to the relief of the beleaguered stronghold, proposing to follow quickly himself with the main body of his army.
The honest servant refused, however, to desert his old lord for a new service, and entreated so earnestly for permission to join his master, who had taken refuge in France, that Grimoald set him free, doubtless feeling that such faithfulness was worthy of encouragement.
We are further told of the king of the Lombards whose striking history we have concisely given, that he gave many new laws to his country, and that in his old age he was remarkable for his bald head and long white beard.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: St. Corbinian
On his return trip Corbinian came to Mais in Tyrol, where he was induced by messengers of Duke Grimoald to go to Bavaria, and settle at Freising.
The dates of the Roman journeys are somewhat confused, but the people of Freising seem to consider 724 as the date of Corbinian's arrival, for in 1724 was celebrated the tenth, and in 1824 the eleventh centenary of the existence of the diocese.
On account of the incestuous marriage of Grimoald, his apparent repentance, and subsequent relapse, Corbinian left Freising, but returned in 729 (725), on the invitation of Huebert, Crimoald's successor, and continued his apostolic labours.

Such was the position's importance that when Pepin's son, Grimoald, became mayor on his father's death, he sought successfully to have his own son adopted by the reigning Merovingian king in order to place him in line for the royal throne.
Despite this temporary setback for the Carolingians, Pepin I's grandson and duke of Austrasia, Pepin II of Heristal, managed to gain the mayoralty of both Austrasia and Neustria in 687.
In contrast to Grimoald he did not then seek access to the throne but limited himself to the office of major domus, a vantage point from which he was able to expand his hold on Frankish territories.

When Longinus was, at a later moment, summoned into the room, it was to find his late guests both dead upon the floor.  The poison had faithfully done its work.  Thus ended a historic tragedy than which the stage possesses few of more striking dramatic interest and opportunities for histrionic effect.
Grimoald had left his son, Romuald, in charge of the city.  On learning of the siege he despatched a trusty friend and officer, Sesuald by name, with some troops, to the relief of the beleaguered stronghold, proposing to follow quickly himself with the main body of his army.
And now occurred an event nobly worthy of being recorded in the annals of human probity and faithfulness, one little known, but deserving to be classed with those that have become famous in history.  When men erect monuments to courage and virtue, the noble Sesuald should not be forgotten.
