Grindelwald was a Dark wizard before Lord Voldemort and his only mention is in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone on Albus Dumbledore's Chocolate Frog card which notes that Dumbledore defeated Grindelwald in 1945.
At the end of the fifth book Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Bellatrix Lestrange is responsible for the death of Sirius Black in the Battle in the Department of Mysteries; during a duel, she shot him into a veil of darkness.
