As a subculture skateboarding was deeply influenced by interaction with the city and the fabric of urban space because in the late 1980s many skaters ‘discovered’ a free, accessible, and seemingly endless alternative terrain in the streets.
If the practice of street skateboarding is based on “destruction of property, destruction of boards, destruction of the skater’s body,” on disrupting the intended meanings codified in urban space, then perhaps the representation of urban space in skateboard magazines and videos should be considered as a countermapping process.

The standard ramp that's been used in skating contests for years is the 12-foot, U-shaped halfpipe.
