Grindstone Island has several barns and we were grateful to Quentin Rueckert, whose family has long time ties to the Island, for giving a tour so photographs could be taken.
This barn is featured on the new website entitled Thousand Islands Life, authored by Paul Malo, which includes information on Grindstone Island, in addition to fine presentations of the rest of the 1000 Islands.
Although not barns, they are part of the unique life on Grindstone Island, especially when well inhabited by year around residences who mostly farmed and send their children to the local schools on the island.

History   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
A grindstone is simply a sandstone, usually turned round on a lathe, in which the particles are sharp, and the sharp particles are bonded in nature so that the bond will break down under pressure and sharpen whatever is pressed against it as it is turned or moved.
In Canada, the grindstone business probably started in a local way in the 1600s by the Acadian French whose only concentration of any size in the Maritimes was based in the huge areas of marshland they had dyked at the head of the Bay of Fundy.
However, the small grindstone, like the even smaller scythe stone, both for use on farms and in lumber camps, was merely a by-product of the manufacture of large grindstones.

Rhode Island wouldn't be the same place without jonny cakes and real jonny cakes couldn't be made without the flint cornmeal ground at the Kenyon Grist Mill in Usquepaugh village, RI.
