Encyclopedia :: encyclopedia : Personal safety   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Personal safety is the safety of an individual, as distinct from public safety.
The emphasis on personal safety is the safety of individual members of society, rather than having the emphasis be on safety of the more abstract public.
Traditionally, public safety falls under the role of police, whereas the new arena of personal safety often falls under the role of the individual, or various human rights organizations, and the like.

Theory of Operation of the Colt .45 ACP Government Model Pistol
When the slide is in battery with a live round in the chamber, the hammer cocked, the safety lock off, the grip safety depressed and the trigger pulled, the rear lateral bar of the trigger bow presses against the front side of the disconnector's paddles.
When the sear is in the full cock notches of the hammer (with the safety lock off and the grip safety depressed), pulling the trigger causes the sear's nose to move out of the full cock notches and permit the hammer to fall against the firing pin.
When the grip safety is being normally depressed by the web of the shooting hand, the lower section of the grip safety pivots forward (the top section pivots rearward) and the tip of the bar on the right forward side of the grip safety moves above the lateral bar on the trigger bow.

 Para: Safety Page
When the slide lock safety (43) is pushed up and fully engages the slide lock notch, the slide is prevented from moving rearward and the drawbar (5) is disengaged and prevents the hammer from moving rearward even it the trigger is squeezed.
The grip safety prevents the rearward travel of the trigger and the slide unless the pistol is gripped firmly with the shooting hand depressing the grip safety.
While the function of the LDA grip safety (14) is similar to that on the P-Series pistols it accomplishes the same task by blocking the hammer (17) with the grip safety lever (58) instead of by the trigger bow as in the P-Series.

The grip safety does need to be fitted to the trigger (that's the point of the grip safety).
Although the hammer and sear don't have anything directly to do with the operation of the grip safety, most aftermarket sears are a little oversized in critical areas to allow for final fittin' and tweakin'.

It was clear at an early stage that the problems were not linked to any lack of systems or procedures, but to the nature of the culture and the way people behaved.
The approach was that safety is not just an eight-hour job, it’s a 24-hour-a-day one.
Even more important, though, is the fact that we demonstrate every day that we are able to take care of ourselves and our colleagues, thus proving worthy of the immense task we have been set – stewardship of the tremendous natural resources held beneath the North Sea.
