In January 1879 Warren succeeded Colonel Lanyon in the civil administration of Griqualand West, but still retained the military command in the province, and either personally conducted or directed further operations in the south of the province, and to the north and north-west, beyond the provincial border.

Only two other Griqualand West cricketers, I Sendin aged approximately 96 years and AE Cooper aged 91 years 5 days, are known to have lived over 90 years of age.

This defacer was not exclusive to Griqualand West and it had been noted at Queenstown and Piquetberg.
Goldblatt mention that after Griqualand was incorporated into the cape Colony in 1880, this defacer was returned to cape town and used for franking purposes and the obliteration of any incorrect charge marks noted on letters.
This was not used in Griqualand West but was used in Hoedjies Bay, in the Western Cape, where it was in use as late as 1900.

This part of Griqualand West, bordering the Kingdom of Lesotho, was illegally occupied by a small transient population of the Boers soon after, in the 1820s.
