  Boccaccio: Griselda
Gualtieri informed Griselda -- that was the young woman's name -- of his intention to marry her, and asked her if she would accept him as a husband, to love, honor, and obey, for better or for worse, and never criticize him nor question his authority.
Griselda appeared to be a worthy addition to Gualtieri's noble household, but the marquis, unsure of the depth of her character, decided to test her loyalty and her patience.
Some time later Griselda gave birth to a son, and her husband, intent on carrying his test still further, berated her and insisted that her child be put to death.

 2. The Story of Griselda By Boccaccio. Matthews, Brander. 1907. The Short-Story
After all which was done, the Marquess having invited all the ladies of the country to be present at so great a feast, when the marriage day was come, Griselda in her gown of country gray, gave them welcome in honorable manner, and graced them all with very cheerful countenance.
My fair and dear affected Griselda, she whom thou supposest for my new-elected spouse, with a glad and cheerful heart embrace for thine own daughter, and this also her brother, being both of them thy children and mine, in common opinion of the whole vulgar multitude imagined to be, by my command, long since slain.
Afterward he matched his daughter in a noble marriage, he and Griselda living long time together in the highest honor that possibly could be.

Griselda must maintain her fidelity and obedience despite the supposed slaying of her daughter and son at her husband's command, as well as after her husband makes her think he is going to remarry another woman.
Petrarch himself, however, states that his object was "not to induce women of [his and Boccaccio's] time to imitate the patience of this wife [Griselda]...but to lead [his] readers to emulate the example of feminine constancy and to submit themselves to God with the same courage as did this woman to her husband" (Petrarch, Letters).
Griselda seems to be mourning her loss and asking herself how the present circumstances could have happened.

 Chapter X.
Griselda was seated on the shore, close beside the water's edge, but it did not come lapping up to her feet in the pretty, coaxing way that our sea does when it is in a good humor.
Griselda waited, looking still, and presently in the middle of the shining streak she saw something slowly moving–something from which the light came, for the nearer it got to her the shorter grew the glowing path, and behind the moving object the sea looked no brighter than before it had appeared.
Griselda saw it close to her, in the shallow water, a few feet from where she stood.

The Griselda Story: The Transformation from ‘the Patient Griselda’
Soon afterwards, Griselda gives birth to a daughter, and Walter decides to try his wife’s obedience; he sends the daughter away, but lets Griselda believe that she is to be exposed.
As already stated, Griselda’s patience has traditionally been regarded as her main characteristic, as is perhaps most obvious from her being called ‘The Patient Griselda’ in most translations and versions during the story’s period of European popularity.
The Griselda portrayed in both Groups II and III is a woman of many virtues: she is the perfect daughter who keeps her poor father’s home as neat as possible, and she is the perfect marquise as well.

La Griselda appartiene alla fascia final-creativa vivaldiana: siamo nel 1735, Vivaldi aveva 47 anni, e in quanto forte di una consolidata esperienza musicale, si potrebbe pensare che la qualità operistica sia ai più alti livelli.

Barnes & Noble.com - Music: A. Scarlatti: Griselda, René Jacobs, CD
This is the first authoritative recording of Alessandro Scarlatti's "Griselda," rendered with exquisite beauty by René Jacobs, the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, and an outstanding cast led by Dorothea Röschmann in the title role.
Warming to the story of "Griselda" (originally by Boccaccio) -- the low-born woman who endures a string of indignities as the king, Gualtiero, tests her suitability to be the mother of his heir -- is not easy.
Although Griselda dated from late in Scarlatti's life when he was 61, the opera displays the same quality of refined sensivity of a type foreign to Scarlatti's contemporaries Purcell and Handel.

The doors stood open, and Griselda found them quite big enough, or herself quite small enough–which it was she couldn't tell, and as it was all a matter of fancy she decided not to trouble to inquire–to pass through quite comfortably.
So Griselda nodded too, and though she did not know what her nods meant, the king seemed to understand and be quite pleased; and when they had nodded enough, the music struck up again, and off they set, harder than before.
Griselda hoped he was enjoying himself, considering that she had to thank him for all the fun she was having, but she felt a little conscience-stricken when she saw that he wouldn't eat anything.
