  Cornaceae
The Cornaceae is best known for two genera, Cornus, the dogwoods, and Nyssa, the tupelos; the latter is often placed, together with the Dove tree Davidia and the Happy tree Camptotheca, in a separate family, the Nyssaceae.
Two other genera, Aucuba, or spotted laurel, and Griselinia, are also sometimes placed in their own families, Aucubaceae and Griseliniaceae respectively.
All members of the family have simple leaves and most are deciduous and have attractive fall foliage, though Aucuba and Griselinia are evergreen.

Griselinia - There are certain exposed spots in our shore gardens where even the toughest of shrubs are apt to fail, and in this little group we have the best of all plants for such a position, thriving in any soil, and sea-wind proof.
Of compact and fairly rapid growth, they make dense bushes of 6 to 10 feet, freely branched to the ground, and of so good a shape that they may be almost left alone.
Hardy as they are far into the north and near the sea, the Griselinias fail inland, save in quite the warmest places, and are tender round London even upon sheltered walls.

Endlicher (1850) placed Griselinia in the Araliaceae and J. Hooker (1867) was the first to position it as a member of the Cornaceae.
Philipson (1967) was the first worker to question the placement of Griselinia in the Cornaceae, contending that it shared many features with the Araliaceae and Escalloniaceae, including geographic distribution, vegetative morphology, nodal anatomy, and the floral vascular system.
Philipson (1977) suggested Griselinia be placed in the informal group Unitegminae, a complex of orders and families (including Cornales, Araliales, Escalloniaceae, and Pittosporaceae) possessing ovules with a single integument, a character shared with Aralidium.

Small and inconspicuous clusters of yellowy-green coloured flowers appear in spring followed by small fruit which turn blue-fl when they are ripe.
Griselinia is excellent for coastal regions as it is very tolerant to wind and salt.
Another type is Griselinia lucida, with its much larger leaves, which will create a bold effect in the garden.

In inland areas, it may be damaged by frost but, at the seaside where frost isn't a problem, a Griselinia littoralis hedge makes an good windbreak.
Its four inch, leathery, broadly ovate apple green leaves are its greatest asset, especially as its yellowish green, early spring flowers are undistinguished.
Griselinia littoralis should be grown in light, fertile, well drained soil in full sun and sheltered from cold winds.

There are altogether six species in the genus Griselinia, found as well as in New Zealand, also in South America, a classic example of the Antarctic flora.
The genus was often placed in the Cornaceae (dogwood family) in the past, but differs from that in many features; although retained in the same order Cornales here, it may not even belong in that, possibly being more closely related to the Apiales.

Burrows--Germination behaviour of four NZ tree species
In a treatment where seeds were cleaned of pericarp, kept moist, and in maximum available daylight, germination was relatively rapid for all species, during autumn-winter, with a high degree of success (Weinmannia 85%, the others 96-100%).
In the dark, germination rate was slower for Beilschmiedia and Griselinia but the success was similar.
No seeds of Beilschmiedia, Dysoxylum, or Griselinia germinated in-fruit, or in a treatment where the cleaned seeds were kept dry for several months before being wetted.

Taylor doesn't say when griselinia, native to Australia, first appeared in a California nursery catalog, but she gives the first listings of about 150 other ornamental plants.
Maybe griselinia arrived with the first acacia trees, in 1853, brought here by Col. J.L.L. Warren, an "Easterner," who had won a prize for growing the first tomato in Massachusetts.
Dipping into Taylor's book reminds me of a visit with my English grandmother: story after story of the old days, and so much excitement surrounding the exploits of men.
