Grissom Air Reserve Base (ARB), located approximately 65 miles north of Indianapolis, Indiana, occupies close to 1,200 acres of land, and is home to the 434th Air Refueling Wing (ARW).
Colonel Grissom, one of the original seven astronauts and a native of Mitchell, Indiana, was killed in his Apollo capsule while it was still on the launch pad at Cape Kennedy, Florida.
The land once occupied by Grissom AFB is not all used by the 434th ARW.

Named for Virgil "Gus" Grissom, who was one of the original seven astronauts, the Grissom Air Museum showcases aircraft of all types.
Grissom takes his place in American history as one of the original seven astronauts in the space program.
The B-17 at Grissom was dubbed Miss Liberty Belle and the curvaceous Miss Belle is depicted on the plane, topless and perched atop the famous bell.

The Grissom Air Museum is located at the edge of Grissom Air Reserve Base, formerly Grissom Air Force Base and, prior to May 12, 1968, Bunker Hill Air Force Base.
Bunker Hill was renamed Grissom AFB in honour of Virgil I. "Gus" Grissom, Indiana native and the second American astronaut into space, who had perished in the Apollo I launch pad fire on January 27, 1967.

To replace the B-47s, the Wing was assigned the B-52G "Stratofortress" bomber and the first B-52G to arrive was christened "Champlain Lady." Transferred from Loring AFB, Maine, the giant B-52s assigned to the 528th BS took positions on the base flight line next to the KC-135s of the 380th ARS.
The second reunion took place at Plattsburgh AFB in September 1983 and on this occasion, dedication of the Plattsburgh Military Museum was one of the highlights of the reunion.
Plattsburgh AFB was the home of two FB-111A squadrons, the 528th and 529th; two KC-135As squadrons, the 310th and 380th; and the 4007th CCTS responsible for training all SAC FB-111A pilots and navigators.

The Grissom Air Museum is doing a wonderful job with what they have.
I haven't been to see the museum in my adult life, but I was actually born at Grissom AFB hospital March 30, 1969.
Grissom would be changed forever after the Gulf War, but it still lives on in memory and in it's duty to serve our country proudly.

The previous disposal decision was to convey approximately 113 acres and 51 facilities on Parcels H, I, J, and K by public sale; Parcel S by negotiated sale; and Parcel F by Public Benefit Conveyance (PBC) through the Department of Interior (DOI) to the state of Indiana.

 Plattsburgh AFB and the 380th BW.
September 1965 saw one of the Wing's B-47s, "Pride of the Adirondacks" departing Plattsburgh AFB for SAC's 14th Bombing and Navigation competition at Fairchild AFB, Washington.
Interestingly, the same day marked three milestones; the 20th anniversary of the Strategic Air Command, the 10th anniversary from the date the first B-47 was received at Plattsburgh AFB as well as the dedication of this permanent monument as a reminder of the part this aircraft played in the nation's defense in the North Country.
Plattsburgh AFB was officially closed on Sept.30, 1995 as a result of the 1993 Defense Closure and Realignment actions.

 The General Dynamics B-58 Hustler
Although the war in Southeast Asia was in full blaze by the mid-1960s, the Hustler was simply not cost-effective for conventional bombing, though in 1967 the Air Force did experiment with several B-58s for conventional strike in "Project Bullseye".
The four stores pylons were modified for the carriage of conventional bombs and flown on low-level strike test missions out of Eglin AFB in Florida.
Some rumors have it that B-58s were painted in jungle camouflage in place of the normal natural metal finish for these tests, but there is little evidence that this is true.
