	Australian construction union moves to shut down Grocon dispute
		Grocon’s 600 workers voted overwhelmingly on January 17 to impose work bans by January 22 after one of the company’s joint managing director Daniel Grollo rejected a previous union proposal.
		Grocon demanded a separate deal providing greater flexibility, including control over starting and finishing times, overtime, rostered-days off and other forms of leave.
		Grocon has obviously decided that it needs to cut costs dramatically on its current contracts worth $2 billion and to position itself to grab a larger share of the construction market from its rivals.

		The Construction Division of the CFMEU in Victoria has condemned the developer Grocon for sacking workers and effectively sabotaging the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) project.
		CFMEU Secretary, Martin Kingham, said 30 form workers were being sacked and another 25 were expected to lose their jobs.
		"It's time we all told Grocon we're calling them to account." The union believes the State Government should intervene as Grocon's client to pull the company into line before they make it impossible for the MCG to be ready by the 2006 deadline.

		The bans were planned because Grocon had rejected of a peace deal requiring the company to suspend legal action against the union.
		Grocon responded to the threat of industrial action by threatening to lock out the entire workforce.
		Grocon will suspend all legal action against the union that is currently before the courts and begin “enterprise negotiations based on industry principles”.

		Mr Combet was speaking after a secret ballot of Grocon construction employees in Melbourne today resulted in a 74% “no” vote against the company’s proposal for a non-union agreement bypassing the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union.
		The CFMEU is the proper representative organisation of the employees and the company should negotiate with the union, in the same way as every other major construction company in Victoria has done.
