Although skilled as a writer, Conklin did that continually in his various jobs...so his interest in SF as an escape and financial hobby, led him into editing.
Conklin's life, while not short, was nonetheless shortened by a heavy smoking habit that eventually killed him.
More the pity, because Conklin's choices of stories set a direction for SF that was every bit as important as is claimed for John W. Campbell.

 An Interview with Bud Webster
Conklin was born [on 9/6/1904 - editor] in Glen Ridge, New Jersey and graduated from Columbia University in 1927.
Conklin didn't sign many books, so any of them are desirable, but the added connection with Wandrei and the fact that I didn't already own a copy of the first printing made this one a necessity.
Conklin never denied that SF could serve as escapist fare, or that "even top-grade science fiction is primarily entertainment" (from the introduction to The Omnibus of Science Fiction; New York: Crown, 1952).

Conklin would go on to edit more than 40 SF anthologies over the next 20 years, and his work would have a profound influence on the developing genre.
Large numbers of Conklin's hardbacks ended up in libraries, and it is possible that a decent dust jacket might be salvaged from an ex-lib copy and married to an else-fine copy with no jacket.
Though it has been said that Lucy was very much a partner in many of Groff Conklin's anthologies up until her death in 1954, this is the only one with which she is credited.

Galaxy Science Fiction - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Galaxy's premiere issue introduced a book review column by celebrated anthologist Groff Conklin, which continued till 1955, and a science column by Willy Ley that continued until his death in 1969 (before the Apollo 11 landing).
After Groff Conklin stepped down as book reviewer, his column was continued by Floyd C. "Gale" (actually Gold, H. Gold's brother).
(Indications that Conklin himself continued the column after 1955 appear to be in error.) In February, 1965, Pohl brought Algis Budrys on as book reviewer; he was succeeded later, sometime before 1972, by Theodore Sturgeon, who passed the job to Spider Robinson in 1975.
