  Vault - LoveToKnow 1911
In the case of vaults built under the level of the ground, the latter gave all that was required, but, when raised aloft, various expedients had to be employed, such as great thickness of walls in the case of barrel or continuous vaults, and cross walls or buttresses when intersecting vaults were employed.
The widest hall vaulted by the Romans was that of the throne room in the palace of Diocletian on the Palatine Hill, and this had the enormous span of zoo ft., its thrust being counteracted by other halls on either side with buttresses outside.
This vault, not built until 164.0, is an exceptional example of the long continuance of traditional workmanship, probably in Oxford transmitted in consequence of the late vaulting of the entrance gateways to the colleges.

 The Gothic Cathedral
To build a barrel vault over nave or side aisles requires an elaborate preliminary scaffolding for the whole area to be vaulted in order to center the arch of the vault until the mortar or cement hardens.
In the groined vault, therefore, there are two points of thrust, the haunch and springing point of the arch, but they are isolated along the lines of intersection of the two barrel vaults which go to make up the groined vault.
Without a clearstory the concentrated thrust of the nave vaulting could be met by the vaults of the triforium gallery, which carried them to the tong pilaster buttresses built on the outside walls of the side aisles and triforium, at those points where the thrusts of their own vaults were concentrated by ribbing.

Vault: Free Encyclopedia Articles at Questia.com Online Library
Ribs to strengthen the groins and sides of a cross vault were first employed in the Church of Sant'Ambrogio, Milan (11th cent.).
Some vaulting compartments or bays were divided by ribs into six segments and were known as sexpartite vaults, but the four-part vault generally prevailed.
New devices were added to these basic forms, including barrel vaults of semi-elliptical section, domes mounted on drums, and cross vaults with groins of elliptical section.

The main shift of the Gothic era occurred from the older, heavier style of Romanesque architecture, based on a solid stone vault, to the lighter, elevated Gothic style based on both the Romanesque and Islamic use of the pointed arch and cross-ribbed vault.
As noted, ribbed vaulting may have originated in Islamic Spain, where it had appeared as early as the second half of the 10th century (Bony 1983).

Types and Forms of Shell Structures
A vault can be constructed from parts of four trumpet shells, as shown in the sketch.
It may be built without ribs because the curvature of the edges makes the shell sufficiently stiffer and the intersection of the surfaces creates two rigid crossed arches which carry the loads to the supports.
A very dramatic effect can be obtained by continuing the shell beyond the edges shown in the sketch.

In the groined vault in particular, the continuous thrust of the barrel vault is broken into individual thrusts which are concentrated along the lines of the intersections or groins of the vault, and brought down to a definite point at the four corners of the vault.
For both barrel vaulting and groined vaulting, builders found it advantageous to mark the limits of the bay by spanning the area to be vaulted with arches of masonry, called ribs, that could be used as partial supports of the vaults themselves.
Without a clerestory the concentrated thrust of the nave vaulting could be met by the vaults of the triforium gallery, which carried them to the strong pilaster buttresses built on the outside walls of the side aisles and triforium, at those points where the thrusts of their own vaults were concentrated by ribbing.

 Arch and Vault
A vault, in architecture, is an arch-shaped structure, usually of masonry, used as the ceiling of a room or other enclosed space, as the roof of a building, or as the support for a ceiling or roof.
The annular vault is similar to the barrel vault, except that the passage within it is not straight but curved, giving the entire structure the appearance of a portion of a ring.
In the simplest form of groined vault, the two conjoined vaults are of the same size and the floor of the vault is square; if the vaults are of different sizes, however, the floor of the vault is rectangular and the two areas of the ceiling between the groins are of unequal shape and size.

Groin vault - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A groin vault or groined vault (also sometimes known as a double barrel vault or cross vault) is a vault produced by the intersection at right angles of two barrel vaults.
Sometimes the arches of groin vaults are pointed instead of round, as in the diagram to the right.
The thrust is concentrated along the groins (the four diagonal edges formed along the points where the barrel vaults intersect), so the vault need only be abutted at its four corners.

 HighBeam Encyclopedia - vault
A vault is generally composed of separate units of material, such as bricks, tiles, or blocks of stone, so shaped or cut that when assembled they form a tightly wedged and stable construction whose weight can be concentrated upon the proper supports.
Vaults constructed of numerous blocks of material pressing against one another exert not only the accumulated downward weight of the material and of any superimposed load but also a side thrust or tendency to spread.
The cross, or groined, vault is formed by the intersection at right angles of two barrel vaults, producing a surface that has arched openings for its four sides and concentration of load at the four corner points of the square or rectangle.
