TWO of Groote Schuur Hospital's most senior doctors have broken ranks to sound the alarm over plans to cut more than 150 doctors and nurses from the hospital staff.
Groote Schuur is apparently set to shoulder the biggest slice of the cut, with a loss of R19m from its budget, although Househam has promised there will be no retrenchments.
They also raised the concern that Groote Schuur and Tygerberg, which train about 30% of the country's doctors and are responsible for 70% of South Africa's academic output, would battle to produce new doctors.

Uys said the beds were to be moved to the over-burdened GF Jooste Hospital in Manenberg, but Groote Schuur's head of surgery, Professor Del Kahn, said information received on Friday showed that not only would Groote Schuur lose its private ward in terms of the cuts, but also vital orthopaedic beds.
