 Popular music
In this respect, popular music differs from traditional folk music, which is created by ordinary people for their own enjoyment; and much classical music, which was originally created to serve the purposes of the Church or for the entertainment of the nobility.
Popular music, often called simply pop music, is music belonging to any of a number of contemporary musical styles broadly popular (ergo the term).
Today's music technology inevitably favors unlimited mass reproduction, which is one of the reasons why the music industry, using the weapon of copyright, is always fighting a rearguard battle against its free availability.

 A history of music
Disco music is an up-tempo style of dance music that originated in the early 1970s, mainly from funk and soul music, popular originally with gay and black audiences in large U.S. cities, and derives its name from the French word discothèque (meaning nightclub), coined from disc + bibliotèque (library) by La Discothèque in Rue Huchette.
Emerging in the early fifties, rock music was initially referred to as “rock 'n' roll.” After 1964 it was simply called “rock music.” The change in terminology indicates both a continuity with and a break from the earlier period; rock music was no longer just for dancing.
Rap music [origin: mid-1970s, New York City] is one of the elements of hip hop; it is a form of rhyming lyrics spoken rhythmically over musical instruments, with a musical backdrop of sampling, scratching and mixing by DJs.

H-Net Review: Susan M. Alexander on Sexing the Groove: Popular Music and Gender
Ironically, although this volume presents evidence for a masculinist culture in popular music, the emphasis placed on the relatively small number of white women who present a women centered vision leaves the impression that women are significantly changing and shaping popular music.
What is missing from this volume on gender and popular music are the large numbers of women who rely upon stereotypes about gendered behaviors to tell a story and to sell their music.
Included are texts in cultural studies, culture: policy and politics, popular culture, popular music, masculinity and culture, feminism and culture, queer sexuality, fan culture, literary theory, film and video, and postmodernity.

 raw42 reviews: moody
the songs groove and flow and there's some innovation in sounds and samples but what's missing mostly is a hook - that melody that sets the songs apart from other instrumental electronica and makes it super catchy (like the prodigy).
gotsta groove is, like the name implies, a groovy little techno ditty with some very average production and a cool feel.
moody is an artist of different styles and this can either be a good thing or a bad thing.

Arabic Groove is a feast of a sampler.
Arabic Groove is a great compilation to start you off into the wonderful and exotic world of Middle Eastern infused dance, electronica, downtempo and chill out.
While not yet part of mainstream American music, Middle Eastern music, as evidenced by the rise of Algerian pop star Khaled in France, has sidled up to other club music forms in the hot spots of Paris, London, and elsewhere.

Takahashi, Yukihiro - Wild & moody - Groove Unlimited
Plenty of harsh industrial sounds and a few contributions from former YMO buddies Sakamoto (Fairlight) and Hosono (bass) as well as Bill Nelson on guitar/vocal can't conceal the fact that the musical material is a bit average, a significant pointer perhaps being the fact that all the song-lyrics come from writers other than Takahashi.
Its overall atmosphere is slightly lacklustre - "Moody" only perhaps, but "Wild" is a definite overstatement.
At barely thirty minutes more a maxi-single than a full-length album, this first post-YMO project by Yukihiro Takahashi is also a bit short on ideas.

 Amazon.ca: Music: Groove [IMPORT]
Organist Richard "Groove" Holmes, whom McCann had recently discovered, was made the leader; a few jump tunes and originals were agreed upon, and the result is a loose, enjoyable jam session.
The five songs on the original LP are joined by a number that was last on a sampler, a McCann vocal track ("Next Spring"), and a previously unreleased version of "Just Friends." The spontaneous and soulfully swinging music, which also features trombonist Tricky Lofton, guitarist George Freeman and drummer Ron Jefferson, is easily recommended.

Popular Music and Jazz - March 1997
Theirs is a blues that emphasizes groove over virtuosity, and when the musicians find a groove they like, they just keep hammering the same three or four notes until they're satisfied.
For much of their first decade the Passengers delivered punch lines in musical puns and stage banter.
But as the blues has spread all over the world, it has never left where it started: the depths of the Mississippi Delta, where it remains folk music played by people who work by day and seek to entertain themselves at night.

 Amazon.co.uk: Music: Vertigo
Customers who bought music by Groove Armada also bought music by these artists:
As with a great deal of dance music through the 1990s, though broadly still considered house, the sound of Vertigo takes as much from the jaded, trip-hop of Bristol as it does from the uplifting house of Studio 54.
I've always wondered if, as an artist and wanting to remain 'chic' (I use the word tentatively), whether having your music in television adverts is a good thing.

 James Moody The Teachers
Evident in this collection is Moody’s virtuosity at his instrument and his ability to tell a story and convey his thoughts or emotion using his instrument as a vessel, all while keeping your attention with a funky groove and catchy melody.
Not to say that Moody is simply a follower of Gillespie’s musical paths, it is simply an acknowledgement that two great musical players think alike, especially when they are open to outside musical and cultural influences.
Moody joined Gillespie’s band in the mid-forties and like Gillespie ventured into the world of Afro-Cuban music with the aid of Chano Pozo.

The New York Review of Books: One Nation Under a Groove
Dorsey can be said to have created gospel music, still a redoubtable force both as an element of worship and as a commercial entity.
The public's interest in bloodletting translated into musical idiom has been declared on the wane at various times in recent years, but the current star du jour, the abrasive Fifty Cent, has risen partly on the wings of his back-story, possibly the most brutal to date.
Dorsey grew up in Atlanta, left school at fourteen, learned to play piano by studying the musicians in vaudeville theaters and taught himself to read and write music from books, then made his way to Chicago, where he would spend the rest of his long life (he died in 1993 at ninety-four).
