Grosse Fuge - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Große Fuge is a composition for string quartet by Ludwig van Beethoven famous for its extreme technical demands on the players as well as for its unrelentingly introspective nature, even by the standards of his late period.
In addition, the Große Fuge is an example of a compositional process Beethoven explored late in life: a combination of elements of variation form, sonata form, and fugue.
In October of 2005, a new transcription of the Grosse Fuge by Beethoven was discovered in a seminary in Philadelphia.

This article centres on the Grosse Fuge because it is the most problematic of all these difficult works, and has been the slowest in finding favour with players and listeners; indeed, one might say that it is the problem work of all time.
Likewise in the Grosse Fuge, after ears and fiddles havebeen battered almost beyond endurance, the tranquil Andante (3) is heard in an altered state of consciousness.
He ends the Grosse Fuge as he ends every one of the late quartets: with a sublime whimsy, an elusive mercurial joy, which I am not the first to identify with the transfiguring "gaiety" of the Taoist sages on Yeat's lapis lazuli mountain.

Beethoven composed the Grosse Fuge in 1825 as the final movement of his String Quartet in B flat major, Op 130 - part of the string quartets Opp 127-135 that were to be his last works.
The Grosse Fuge, however, never made it into the string quartet it was intended for.
Beethoven's publisher asked him to substitute another last movement; the composer agreed, and the Grosse Fuge was issued posthumously in May 1827 as a separate piece, Op 133.

Grosse Fuga is an exceptionally complex, difficult, unpianistic and nearly unplayable piece of music.
Yet as an essay on the art of the fugue, it is at the composer’s highest level of imagination, skill and creativity with extremely interesting and carefully crafted details.

A Historic Discovery, in Beethoven's Own Hand - New York Times   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
The "Grosse Fuge," originally part of a string quartet, had been badly treated by a baffled public, and he was evidently eager to see it live on in a form in which music lovers could play it on their pianos at home.
The newly discovered manuscript is also a rare piano transcription by Beethoven of one of his own works, and the only complete manuscript source for the piano version of the "Grosse Fuge." It will allow, finally, for a critical edition of the piece.
Above all, it may shed light on Beethoven's conception of the "Grosse Fuge," a work with almost mythical status in the music world, variously described by historians as a "leviathan," a "symphonic poem" and an achievement on the scale of the finale of his Ninth Symphony and Bach's "Art of Fugue."

130 is a very different piece when it includes the 15-minute "Grosse Fuge," a frenzied, four-voice abstraction of symphonic proportion; think of a deaf Beethoven, his hair famously mussed, shaking a defiant fist at fate.
The "Grosse Fuge" was published separately, but many groups today are choosing to perform Op.
The players -- violinists Eugene Drucker and Philip Setzer, violist Lawrence Dutton and cellist David Finckel -- attacked the "Grosse Fuge" with remarkable physicality and an expressive marriage of individual liberty and cohesive ensemble that could stand as a definitive statement of the Emerson's style.

Beethoven conceived his Grosse Fuge as the sixth and final movement of his String Quartet in B flat Major, Op.130, written in 1825.
Even today, the Grosse Fuge is considered very demanding both by executants and listeners.
Using a solo quartet as well as a string orchestra also enables the structural contrasts implied within the score to be more effectively highlighted than in either the original string quartet version or later orchestral transcriptions.

The Kodaly Quartet's Beethoven odyssey continues with one of the late, 'Galitsin quartets and the ultimate test, the Grosse Fuge.
Truth be told, the two go together, since the Grosse Fuge started life as the finale of the B flat Quartet, opus 130, before Beethoven's misgivings about its scale led to him replacing it with a shorter and more engaging movement.
As for the Grosse Fuge, the technical difficulties are surmounted with a confidence which allows the attention to be drawn to the musical argument, and rightly so.

It was a calculated move on the part of the Arditti Quartet, if not a bit risky because those interested strictly in the Beethoven piece could leave at intermission.
The "Grosse Fuge," with its banging contrapuntal melodic explosions, was so strange for its time that Beethoven took it out of its original context in a longer piece to make it independent.
Historically, Beethoven marks the beginning of many musical movements, and the Arditti Quartet followed the "Grosse Fuge" with pieces that continued the composer's experimentation.

A skilled musician would be able to create hundreds of different tones and sounds with a violin bow, on a flat sound generator (such as a metal plate, a gong or a tamtam).
Such a model is the foundation for the Grosse Fuge - only that it´s not a violin bow to evoke the tones but once more the roaring of the water masses: vitreous, metallic, breathlike the tones build upon one another, some of them floating free, others following the pulse of the roaring water.
Like huge, multidimensional waves across all eight systems of speakers more and more dense layers build up, which make the sound of the whole surface perceptible.

130 quartet with its original finale, the "Grosse Fuge." Behind these performances is the belief that following the composer's initial intent is somehow more authentic or correct.
Although it's interesting (from a historical perspective) to experience the quartet as it was first envisioned, this type of performance should be much less frequent.
The Grosse Fuge, given its monolithic nature, doesn't deserve to be trivialized by these previous movements (I'm not questioning their quality, but they have a much different character), and these movements don't deserve to be bogged down or overshadowed by the fugue.
