Grosse Pointe Blank - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Grosse Pointe Blank is an 1997 American comedy movie, directed by George Armitage, and starring John Cusack and Minnie Driver.
While in Grosse Pointe, Blank reunites with old flame Debi Newberry, played by Driver, who was to be his date to the prom when Martin up and disappeared without a trace on prom night after an epiphany caused him to join the Army immediately.
After their relationship is reforming, Blank is approached by a rival hitman, Grocer, played by Dan Aykroyd, who wants Blank to join him in a union of hitmen, which serves as a comedic sub-plot.

That's the sorry predicament of John Cusack in George Armitage's "Grosse Pointe Blank," which sets out to be a stylish hybrid of fl comedy, action movie and love story and ends up being a shining sunbeam -- albeit a Ray-Ban-tinted one -- about trust and redemption.
Martin, who's returning to his hometown (after which the movie is titled) to investigate a possible job, figures he might drop in on his 10th high school reunion, and maybe even engineer an assignation with Debi (Minnie Driver), the woman he stood up on prom night lo these many years ago.
His Martin Blank is deliciously in touch with his own bad self, and only a small handful of his costars -- sister Joan Cusack as Marcella, Martin's efficient woman Friday, Dan Aykroyd as his competitor in the killing biz and Alan Arkin as his reluctant shrink -- can stand up to him.

Grosse Pointe Blank is an amiable fl comedy, cowritten by Cusack and directed by Jonathan Demme protégé George Armitage (Miami Blues), has the feel of Demme's Something Wild and Married to the Mob--which is to say its humour is dark and brightly coloured at the same time.
The story is framed around Blank's disappearance on prom night ten years previous and his sudden and unexpected return on the eve of his ten-year class reunion at Grosse Pointe (Michigan) High School.
Martin Blank (John Cusak) is becoming increasingly troubled by his choice of career as a hit man (a fact he makes plain in an early hilarious scene with Alan Arkin as his Psychiatrist) and fate lands him a job and a High School Reunion in his hometown of Grosse Point.

Grosse Pointe Blank is a risky piece of work, if only because it's hard to create a professional hit man people can identify with.
And there's the inevitable fun of reunion night as Blank takes on all the forces of evil, not the least of which is a drunken classmate who just wants somebody to "do some blow" with him.

Grosse Pointe, a suburb of Detroit, restricts its parks to only residents of the city (unless non-residents are brought in as guests), and is also used as a selling point to draw people into moving into the city.
Everyone in Grosse Pointe is paying a fee for the upkeep of the park without choice, meaning that even those who don’t wish to subsidize the city parks must also pay.
I think a compromising gesture that could be undertaken by Grosse Pointe is to simply charge a nominal entrance fee for any non-resident who wants to enter (rather than simply ban non-residents).

John Cusack plays Martin Blank, a professional killer attending his high school reunion and confronting his high school sweet heart who he stood up on prom night and hasn't seen in 10 years.
Blank not only has to deal with his feeling for Debi Newberry (Minnie Driver), but also with the reaction to his opposition to a plan to unionise professional killers (it seems like a satire straight out the Simpsons, doesn't it?).
Joan Cusack, who plays Blank's highly-efficient secretary, is terrific as is Aykroyd, in one of the best roles I've seen in a while.

There is a scene fairly early on in GROSSE POINT BLANK where John Cusack (Martin Blank, hence the title; Grosse Pointe is the location of the reunion) is visiting Joan Cusack (his mother in the story) amd the mother is suffering from obvious memory loss.
The jokes are fairly sick; she tells Blank she had talked to his father recently, and the next scene shows Blank at his father's grave, which has his death date as 1989.
