View from Grosse Scheidegg towards the Eiger and Kleine Scheidegg
The Grosse Scheidegg (1961 m, 46°39.54′N 8°6.78′E) is a pass in the Bernese Alps in Switzerland, connecting Grindelwald and Meiringen.
The road over the pass is only open to bus traffic, however hiking is popular and this pass forms part of the cross-country Alpine Pass Route.

From the Grosse Scheidegg itself, the views down to Grindelwald, the Eiger, and the Männlichen ridge are superb.
The whole of this day's route over the Grosse Scheidegg is covered by a bus route until late October, making it very easy to shorten the walking.
An alternative end to the walk, detouring from Grosse Scheidegg round to First, is described by walkingswitzerland.com.

 Brig to Brig 1998
From Munster to Brig it's almost definitively descent: there are only some stretch lightly climbing up (at his point of the trip you notice the slightest slope) and the landsacpe become anonymous: luckily Brig shows up suddenly and the rail station is easily retrievable.
Grosse Scheidegg it's a great place for bicycles: there aren't so many passes with the last 10 kms closed to cars (the last 6 on the other side).
In 1996 the 7th stage of Tour de Suisse was Ascona - Grindelwald including the three climbs of Gottardo, Susten and Grosse Scheidegg: 197 km with 4619 mt. of devilement.

 Hiking in der Schweiz
The start of this hike begins at Grosse Scheidegg (Great Watershed) which can be reached from Grindelwald via a very scenic bus ride that takes you right below the base of the Wetterhorn.
From Grosse Scheidegg, where the bus drops you off, there are close up views of the Wetterhorn and down towards Grindelwald and the Eiger.
The hike from Grosse Scheidegg to the gondola station at First is a pretty liesurely hike with an ascent of only 200m along the 4km hike.

Buses from Grosse Scheidegg, Waldspitz and Busalp also serve this side of the valley.
You hike from there down to the road where you catch the bus from Grosse Scheidegg.
The restaurant at Faulhorn was not as good as the other ones we have been to on this trip, but it is the oldest mountain hotel in Europe and all supplies are brought in by helicopter.

Like the other passes, Grosse Scheidegg seemed to go on forever.
Itwas not as steep as Grosse Scheidegg in this direction, but it was considerablylonger.
I felt good about how far I had climbed (myaltimeter showed a gross vertical climb today of 7,550), but I was disappointedthat I failed to make it all the way to the top.

OK, I forded the stream (about 50 cm deep, 7 m wide, so it was not too bad and quite refreshing for my feet, as I was riding in the sweating boots for the last 6 hours: remember that I climbed Grosse Scheidegg pass earlier in the morning).
We were together on a tough climb from Meiringen to Grosse Scheidegg Pass (see their photos) and they had a bit easier task: they were on their own bikes and without luggage.

However, the better walk is along the ridge more or less to the SSE to Kleine Scheidegg past the Tschuggen.
There are two paths down from Kleine Scheidegg to Grund, one under the Eiger which goes through every station (so you can cop out on the train) and the other through Büstiglen which starts NE and goes into the woods.
The really hardy can take the bus to Grosse Scheidegg and walk the whole ridge but it is also pleasant to split the trip over two days, from Grosse Scheidegg to First and walk down as the first (sorry) part.

June 1973 To leave Grindelwald, my first wife Jane and I took the chairlift to First and walked the other way, East to Grosse Scheidegg 1961m on the contour path and over on a jeep track past Rosenlaui down the road to Meiringen 595m, with spectacular views up to the Rosenlaui Glacier.
Near the Reichenbach Falls at Zwirgi (where Sherlock Holmes is alleged to have died), a clearly marked footpath resumes after the jeep track.

The typical alpine landscape, the glaciers, the quietness and the mountains towering high above you make this one of my favorite places in Switzerland.
When I reached the Grosse Scheidegg I feld almost sorry that the climb was over already.
But this feeling was quicky forgotten when I saw the magnificent view on Grindelwald deep down in the valley below and the incredible Eiger north-face.
