The original Grand Place was a medley of buildings constructed between the 15th and 17th centuries in a variety of styles.
The Grand Place was first laid out after the construction of the town hall, at the centre of the city's commercial district.
The French launched a massive bombardment of the city centre with cannons and mortars, setting it on fire and flattening the majority of the Grand Place.

Not really as big as the name would imply, the Grote Markt /Grand-Place, to be linguistically correct in the Belgian way, this collection of medieval/ Renaissance houses, especially the City Hall, is still outstanding, especially when you can enjoy great Belgian food and drinks in one of the little alleys nearby.
As such, the Grand Place was a perfect venue, with a lovely architectural setting and a lively atmosphere, scented by the aroma of waffles and "French" fries.
Although there are a few nice parts to see around la Grande Place, many things are just too touristy, perhaps most emphasised by the Manneken Pis statue which is a symbol of kitsch.

Go to the Grote Markt/Grand Place area, see Manneken Pis, maybe a museum, and have a beer (though they are terribly overpriced in central Brussels).
Grand Place in Brussels is beautiful and it's worth going to Brussels just to see it.
If it is A'dam, going to Brussels or Antwerp which are on the major train lines will save you a few hours travelling, and if you dont have that much time, that maybe worth it.
