Prior to the incorporation of Ayer (which was mainly formed from Groton) on February 14, 1871, the population of this town was 3,384.
The name of "Groton" was probably given to it in memory of the possessions of the Winthrop family in Suffolk County, England.
Groton has produced many eminent men, of whom are Colonel William Prescott (1736-1795); Oliver Prescott, M.D. (1762-1827), an author, and founder of Groton Academy; Samuel Dana (1767—1835), Amos Lawrence (1786-1852), Ether Shepley, LL.D. (1789-187-), and Abbott Lawrence, LL.D. Hon.

He was the son of Samuel, a Revolutionary officer, and was educated in the Groton academy, which was founded by his father.

The magnificent cathedral-style stone chapel (modeled after Notre Dame in Paris), with its tall gothic steeple visible for some distance, is a fitting testimony to the school’s solid Episcopal roots.

GROTON -- The bell of the First Parish Church began to call townspeople a few minutes before 10 a.m., yesterday, summoning them to a small green just outside its doors.
The bell, according to a marker set up in front of the church, was cast in 1819 by the Paul Revere Foundry, as were the town's numerous other historical buildings.
