 Chauvet Cave
And although the Grotte Chauvet, in southeast France, was no gathering spot for Stone Agers drinking white wine and nibbling canapes, it came close: for thousands of years, archeologists now think, people returned to the grotto again and again on what seems to have been a spiritual pilgrimage.
The Grotte Chauvet is one of hundreds of natural caverns cut into the pale limestone cliffs that form the Ardeche Gorge.

TIME INTERNATIONAL: Shadows on the Wall --PAGE 1-- October 19, 1998
The document described Chauvet as a "government employee assisted by two volunteers," and deprived all three of rights to the photographs taken shortly after the cave's discovery, some of which were published in the Feb. 13, 1995 edition of TIME.
Seeing the ministry reap the rewards of their find, Chauvet and his two co-discoverers issued the ministry a formal letter to keep it from exploiting pictures taken in the cave.
The situation for Chauvet and his fellow spelunkers took a different turn in July, when three high-ranking ministry officials were summoned to appear in court at the end of November, two on charges of producing a fake document--the backdated warrant--and a third for complicity.

The last and deepest of the Chauvet Cave chambers, the Salle du Fond, is the home of the Venus and the Sorcerer.
From the ceiling of the chamber, which is nearly 7 m [20 feet] high, a vertical cone of limestone hangs down ending in a point 1.10 m [3ft 6 ins] off the floor.
A cluster of convergent data suggests that the Venus is Aurignacian and that she was created in the first period of the decoration of the Chauvet Cave.

However, Jean-Marie Chauvet and his friends had, from their first explorations, taken note of two imprints that they attributed to human feet.
The Chauvet imprints correspond to those of an approxi-mately eight year old child, measuring 1.30 m.

Grotte de Chauvet, discovered in 1994, is a complex of painted and engraved chambers dated to around 30,000 B.C. Other dates, some from torch smears on the walls and some from the images themselves, indicate that the site was visited over a period of 6,000 or 7,000 years.
The cave was also undoubtedly used as a den by cave bears.
We ask you to review what is known about this important site and to speculate on its meaning for the Upper Paleolithic people who created it.
