Caterpillar track - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tracks are much less likely to get stuck in soft ground, mud, or snow, since they distribute the weight of the vehicle over a larger contact area, decreasing its ground pressure.
Tracks are moved by a toothed drive wheel, or drive sprocket, driven by the motor and engaging with holes in the track links to drive the track.
It is common to see tracked vehicles such as bulldozers or tanks transported long distances by a wheeled carrier such as a semitrailer or train, though technological advances have made this practice less common among tracked military vehicles than it once was.

Maneuvering by Reference to Ground Objects
These maneuvers, referred to as "ground track" or "ground reference" maneuvers, are performed at a relatively low altitude while applying wind drift correction as needed to follow a predetermined track or path over the ground.
This requires planning ahead of the airplane, maintaining orientation in relation to ground objects, flying appropriate headings to follow a desired ground track, and being cognizant of other air traffic in the immediate vicinity.
They are designed to develop the ability to control the airplane, and recognize and correct for the effect of wind while dividing attention among other matters.

 Raytheon MIM-104 Patriot
The interim PAC-1 modification, first flight tested against an MGM-52 Lance target missile in September 1986, incorporated only software changes to the search and track algorithms and the phased-array radar (the maximum elevation angle of the latter was increased from 45° to almost 90°).
The TVM guidance method is particularly efficient in long-range and/or low-altitude engagements, when the ground radar can "see" much less of the energy reflected from the target than the MIM-104's monopulse seeker.
Because the missile is always nearer to the target than the ground radar, this method significantly enhances accuracy and the ability to discriminate decoys from the real threat.

Ground speed deriving circuit - Patent 4106093
It should be pointed out that although the derived ground speed is independent of aircraft track, if a large heading change is made, the ground speed producing circuit will require some time to settle out, the precise time being a function of the rate of turn and magnitude of the heading change.
A circuit for generating a signal proportional to the ground speed and track angle of an aircraft derives a signal from a node in a coherent or vector filter having a position vector input and output.
Ground speed is useful in deriving estimated time of arrival, in calculating speed of head or tail winds, in evaluating aircraft performance, and is often merely of general interest.

 ELECTRO-PNEUMATIC BLOCK SIGNAL SYSTEM
It consists in the use of danger signals at the beginning of specified lengths or blocks of track, each of which signals is to be kept at danger when a train is on the block protected by it until the block in question is free.
The circuit closer closes the circuit when the piston is in the upward position or when the "Home" semaphore is at "Danger." This establishes a ground connection for the line leading to the "Distant" semaphore magnet below it, which connection is of zero resistance.
It has been found advisable to protect all classes of traffic, and accordingly the system has been put in operation on the four tracks.

Archaeology Review 1996 - 97 : 4.20.4 The Sweet Track, the Brue Valley, Somerset
The Sweet Track was a raised plank walkway that ran across a reed swamp over a distance of two kilometres, joining an island in the swamp to a ridge of high ground to the south.
Reconstruction of the trackway has been made in a reed bed on the reserve and it is hoped that a study of its decay during the next few years may provide some answers to the remaining questions about the Sweet Track and its survival over 5,803 years.
The monitoring shows that water levels have remained consistently above the top of the trackway and that the burial environment is reduced or highly reduced at track level, ensuring that no significant decay by micro-organisms operating in aerobic conditions is likely to occur.
