Ground truth - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ground truth is a term used in cartography, meteorology, analysis of aerial photographs, satellite imagery and a range of other remote sensing techniques in which data are gathered at a distance.
More specifically, ground truth may refer to a process in which a pixel on a satellite image is compared to what is there in reality (at the present time) in order to verify the contents of the pixel on the image.
Ground truth is usually done on site, performing surface observations and measurements of various properties of the features of the ground resolution cells that are being studied on the remotely sensed digital image.

The Ground Truth: "Cinematic Call to Arms"   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
This is the premise behind "The Ground Truth," a compelling and intensely provocative new documentary that profiles a dozen veterans of the current Iraq war, all of whom are suffering its aftereffects.
The Ground Truth was inspired by a similar desire to get involved: Three years ago, convinced that the number of war wounded was being underreported, she interviewed Iraq veterans about their combat experience and their difficulties re-entering civilian life.
Aside from a mawkish score, The Ground Truth is riveting, unadorned oral history, a companion piece to the Vietnam-era documentary Winter Soldier, which similarly allowed a group of servicemen to finally share their internal terror.

Ground Truth and Social Sensors - Diary of a Knowledge Broker
Ground truth is the unfettered and unfiltered relating of people’s experiences within a human social system.
People and their truth, like life itself, will find a way to express itself, even it means setting in motion disruptive patterns of behavior that threaten to totally transform the system in which they exist.
Therein lays the challenge with respect to ground truth: some have to want to hear, some have to be willing to say, and others still have to respond to what the truth means about the design of the system and make changes accordingly.

One way to do this is by what we call "ground truth", which is one part of the calibration process.
This is where a person on the ground (or sometimes in an airplane) makes a measurement of the same thing the satellite is trying to measure, at the same time the satellite is measuring it.
Usually we believe the ground truth more than the satellite, because we have more experience making measurements on the ground and sometimes we can see what we are measuring with the naked eye.

Susan Van Haitsma | The Ground Truth: Iraq War Veterans Speak Out
A film review of "The Ground Truth" in the Austin Chronicle includes the reviewer's suggestion, "It would be a good idea to show Foulkrod's movie nationwide on high school career days." As it happened, I attended a local high school career fair the evening before the film opened.
One of the points made by the veterans interviewed in "The Ground Truth" (including a former Marine recruiter) is that recruiters do not tend to use the word "kill" when they talk to young people about enlistment.
If "The Ground Truth" could have been shown as part of that high school career night, the truths offered by the young veterans in the film would have done much more than we could at our table to inform and enlighten both students and recruiters about the realities of enlistment.

'The Ground Truth' hurts, but it's necessary - The Boston Globe
There are two moments in ``The Ground Truth" when the film's unforgiving spotlight suddenly shines out at the audience sitting in the dark.
``The Ground Truth" is the documentary any American with an opinion on our involvement in Iraq owes it to his or her conscience to see.
The purpose is to build ``a sustained desire to kill," in the words of one of the soldiers, and ``The Ground Truth" does offer the insight that video simulations have greatly increased training efficiency in the years since W orld W ar II and Vietnam.

Ground Truth Collections at the MTI Core Sites
The ground truth program described in this paper is producing a diverse set of databases that are being used to validate the MTI science algorithms and determine the accuracy of MTI’s radiometric data.
In addition, the MTI imagery along with the ground truth is helping some core site managers with their research, and helping others better understand and optimize the mechanisms by which waste heat from their facilities is dissipated in the environment.
The ground truth collections at many of these sites will probably continue for another year or more, because accumulating statistically significant numbers of usable images at the core sites is a time-consuming process.

Variety.com - Reviews - The Ground Truth: After the Killing Ends
"Ground Truth" asserts that the U.S. military, in an era of cuts in manpower, equipment and health care, has neither the interest nor inclination to deal with the human wreckage it creates -- and that Iraq is creating more volatile wreckage than any war in our history.
Foulkrod has astounding footage, the most disturbing of which she says she gleaned from the Internet, and from soldiers who wanted to share it: A cluster of computer images, for example, each represents Iraqi civilians blown to bits via a remote rocket launch.
But the substance of the movie is potent, and so powerfully presented by those who have fought and are still fighting a controversial war, that the message of "Ground Truth" cannot be dismissed.

Integrity and Ground Truth - Diary of a Knowledge Broker
In other words, we speak the ground truth and with that truth spoken and heard, the groundwork is laid for our participation rather than to have others represent us on our behalf.
So in essence, what you are saying, is we need to find ourselves and project our "integrity" for others to be understood, for democracy to have even a remote chance to function as it was intended - for our participation in the social and political processes to have meaning and direction.
To me that means we have got to be honest, first with ourselves and then with others, our expression has to become truthful and only then can we overcome the current impasse of political representation increasingly not really representing what we want and stand for.

Human Rights First released a new report on September 8, 2004 outlining how the range of official investigations into U.S. military detention and interrogation practices suffer from flaws in both design and execution that leave gaps in understanding of how current operations led to so many instances of torture and abuse.
From the introduction of Getting to Ground Truth: “Human Rights First has welcomed the investigations both completed and still underway into the circumstances surrounding the abuses that occurred during U.S. detention and interrogation.
Even so, months after the Abu Ghraib photos were published – and years after the first abuse-related deaths in U.S. custody in the “war on terror” – we are still not in a position to say that we know how to ensure that such abuses never happen again.
