Grove Press 1949-1985   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Grove Press was a failing enterprise with only three titles on its list when Barney Rosset bought it in 1951.
During the next 30 years, Rosset’s energy and ambition, his commitment to new and unknown writing, and his aggressive disdain for respectability turned Grove into a giant—as significant to post-war letters as James Laughlin’s New Directions or Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s City Lights, but a bit more raffish.
With the publication of D. Lawrence’s unexpurgated Lady Chatterley’s Lover and Henry Miller’s Tropic of Cancer, Rosset and Grove successfully challenged U.S. censorship laws.
