Death grunt - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The death grunt (also referred to as death growl, death vocal or cookie monster vocal) is a singing style usually employed by vocalists of the death metal and fl metal musical genres, but also can be heard in a variety of heavy metal subgenres.
Possessed is considered by some to be one of the earliest bands to employ death growls, as are Necrophagia and Master.
Also, Chris Barnes (from Cannibal Corpse) is notable for having deepened his grunts to tones lower than those which had been recorded at the time.

Growling on the saxophone is used in rock, jazz and blues as an effect to change the sound of the sax, giving it more emphasis.
Sometimes, growling will be used for a whole song, like distortion on a guitar, and sometimes, it will be added only to certain notes or phrases to colour them.
Growling is done by singing, or rather vocalising, through the saxophone while playing the note.

What Do You Do With a Growling Dog?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Growling is the dog's way of telling those around her that she's frightened or otherwise threatened by something that's going on.
If the dog growls, it is meant as a warning; hopefully the person or animal that is a threat to the dog (and you can be a threat to the dog whether that is your intention or not) will back off.
You must make note of the situation that caused the growling (the person/type of person -- child, other dog; the location where it occurred -- the dog's crate, the front yard; was there food involved, a bitch in season, a lot of noise, a thunderstorm approaching, etc.).

I am confused about the whole "growling thing" I understand that Boxers are very vocal, some of the training methods I have read say that you should not allow your dog to growl for any reason, other's say it is a healthy form of expression and play.
Meanwhile, if the growling bothers you and you would rather your dog not do that during play, stop play when it happens, and when she stops growling, wait 3 seconds, treat her and praise her and then resume play.
Growling is a natural behavoir and is used with other dogs to warn them away or to warn you of intruders or that something is wrong.

 Puppy Growling at Other Dogs
If the puppy is usually submissive, and if he is often startled or acts timid in new situations, then the growling he demonstrates in puppy class is likely caused by fear.
If your puppy growls when being approached by a friendly big dog, it’s best to not scoop up the puppy into your arms.
After a few classes, the fearful puppy will normally eventually start to get a little braver, and will cautiously approach the other dogs (who are on leash at their owner's feet).

Dog Behavior Problems: digging, chewing, growling, understanding your dog's behavior
Growling is usually induced by fear and can be provoked by anything; for example, a stranger approaching, a child running toward a dog, another dog getting too close, a hand raised as if to hit, a scary stranger getting too close to a loved one, or someone getting to close to a dog's food.
In some cases, growling is unacceptable, especially if the dog is growling at a child.

Dogs may also bark or growl when they see prey, such as squirrels, and they may bark for attention, food or if they are anxious.
Dogs often growl when they are fearful or trying to assert themselves in a situation.
If the dog’s fear or assertiveness is alleviated by growling or barking, the dog will learn that his behavior is acceptable and the behavior may become more frequent or severe.

A dog that can inhibit his behavior (growl less) is less likely to bite.
At the dog, you have taught the dog to maintain a less reactive stance (sitting) and taught it to inhibit the growl and interrupt the growl.
One thing it does offer is the level of awareness of what specific gestures cause the dog to react - was it the size of the gesture or the speed of approach - was it what the helper wore or sex - was it bending over, maybe touching the mid back but not the shoulder.

RE: Growling vocals and great music
Growling and screaming vocals always sound terrible to me. A singer can put a grit and emotion in his voice without creating the equivalent of attacking a snare drum with a jackhammer, or putting a guitar in a wood chipper, or pushing a piano out of a 3rd story window.
Growling is fine used occasionally for dramatic affect, or contrast with a female voice.

The grumbling is associated with happy posture, and the sound is not maintained through both inhalation and exhalation, nor is it accompanied by tight lips or showing teeth.
If the dog is just meeting you and it looks happy, and the owner looks happy, and the sound happens only as the dog exhales, and the overall appearance of the dog and owner is one of friendliness, then that dog is probably grumbling.
