  Cokemachineglow.com : Gruff Rhys: Candylion
But it’s not like Rhys shouldn’t be taken seriously, and for every googling calypso like “Gyrru Gyrru Gyrru” or long bard fart like “Skylon,” the albums he makes are that much more accessible.
Just, when, along with his Super Furry bandmates and all their side projects, Rhys is dripping out album after album of thick, strange, and sometimes downright adorable pop music, Candylion sounds poised, more than any other release, to wink out and move on.
Gruff’s first solo album, Yr Atal Genhedlaeth, came out in the spring of 2005; it was a teensy affair, morbidly simple but so easy to piece apart that the Welsh lyrics went catholic on melody alone.

Gruff Rhys - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gruff Rhys (pronounced [grɪf r̥iːs]; born July 18, 1970 in Haverfordwest (Welsh: Hwlffordd) in south-west Wales) is a member of the Super Furry Animals who were at the forefront of the wave of successful Welsh bands which broke through into the mainstream music scene in the 1990s.
Rhys has occasionally collaborated with other artists, providing vocals for the track "Dial: Revenge" on the Mogwai album Rock Action as well as guesting on the song "Fear of Guitars" from the album Machine Says Yes by FC Kahuna and the song "Do's and Don'ts" by Boom Bip.
On 24 January, 2005, Gruff Rhys released his first solo album, Yr Atal Genhedlaeth, to critical acclaim, on the Placid Casual label.

Gruff Rhys: Yr Atal Genhedlaeth - PopMatters Music Review
As Gruff Rhys points out in his song-by-song analysis of Yr Atal Genhedlaeth, his first solo outing away from Super Furry Animals, translation can be a hurdle of discontent or a gift of serendipity.
Many of the album's songs are already built around involved puns in their native Welsh; explaining the complex wordplay can either enhance the lyrical gymnastics or deflate them completely.
For instance, Rhys describes the record's title as "a play on words that doesn't really translate": Yr Atal Genhedlaeth, literally "The Stopped Generation", refers to a Welsh term for contraception; however, "atal" also means "stuttering", so the simultaneous translation is "The Stuttering Generation".

Super Furry Animals` frontman Gruff Rhys has been writing for and performing with the well-known Welsh quintet since the band`s 1996 debut, FUZZY LOGIC.
As on SFA`s MWNG, Rhys adds another skewed angle to his psychedelic pop-rock by singing all of the lyrics in Welsh.
Rhys also croons his way through an electronica-rock ballad ("Rhagluniaeth Ysgafn"), strums acoustic guitar on sing-along Britpop ("Ni Yw Y Byd"), and rap-sings through angular, but surprisingly tuneful, blip-hop ("Caerffosiaeth").

So we have to rely on Gruff’s translations to get a feel for the meaning of the songs (they are about pirates, sewage cities and experts apparently).
It’s the first time these songs have been performed live and one gets the overwhelming impression that Gruff hadn’t given much thought to the logistics of his debut solo performance and is heard lamenting one more than one occasion “I don’t have enough hands”.
However the unassuming nature of Mr Rhys and the quality of music on display here would testify this is not the case.

Gruff Rhys - Candylion : album review
In contrast to Rhys' first solo collection Yr Atal Genhedlaeth, Candylion is a much more tightly focused and accessible collection of songs (the title track has even found itself featuring heavily on Radio 2), but with enough depth and edge to banish any fears that Rhys may have sold out in some way.
For although the sound of Candylion is mostly acoustic based and rather pastoral, there are also some moments of experimentation that 90% of other bands wouldn't dream of pursuing.
Starting with a plane safety announcement, it quickly settles into a loping rhythm while Rhys describes a plane journey with "mediocre movies and frivolous magazines" while sat next to an actress whose work Rhys despises.

The extra-curricular activities of ‘Yr Atal Genhedlaeth’ are a blast from start to finish; the fact that Gruff Rhys has elected to release these nuggets on his own make the prospect of the new Super Furry Animals album doubly exciting.

Gruff Rhys' first solo album was a good example of why people should generally stay away from solo albums - songs which were probably rejected by their band, cheap production because there's no big record company bucks behind it, and wilfully obtuse.
While his first album was all in Welsh, and the sleeve notes are doubled up in his native tongue (as are all SFA releases), just three songs on here are in Welsh.
A lot of the time, the record still sounds quite stripped down, with just Gruff's acoustic guitar driving the songs but every now and then gorgeous strings sweep you away, and that's down to the two producers.

One face that has been largely absent, though, is frontman Gruff Rhys, who emerges here, blinking as if from hibernation, with his second solo album.
Recorded at SFA producer Gorwel Owen’s cottage in Anglesey, Candylion is a more layered, fully-realised album than 2005’s Yr Atal Genhedlaeth; 12 tracks of fantastical, strings-assisted acoustic pop and exotica-tinged psychedelia that smuggle in curious parables and flashes of apocalypse amid its nursery rhyme sing-songs.
In one comic passage, Gruff considers self-immolation when he recognises the tedious TV personality sat next to him.

That Super Furry Animals frontman Gruff Rhys had the audacity to record his first solo album entirely in Welsh, a language spoken by less than 600,000 people, is to his credit.
Recorded in about a week with virtually all instrumentation performed by Rhys, the album is stripped of the lysergic embellishments typically found throughout the Furries' seven-album catalog.
The only song on the album longer than four minutes is a cover, "Chwarea'n Troi'n Chwerw." The lullaby, though sung beautifully, is a bit of a snooze compared to the lively melodies preceding it, but it's an apt closer to the album.

Born in 1970, Rhys played in Creation Records' Emily as well as Ffa Coffi Pawb, but his first foray into the musical arts was at the ripe age of five, when he wrote an odd little number about a train driver who's contemplating his own death.
First a left-field techno group, then later a whacked-out guitar group, SFA got much of its character and respect from Rhys' outlandish and obscure lyrical slants.
And in true Gruff Rhys form, it was an entirely Welsh affair.
