Leroy Grumman and others worked for the Loening Aircraft Engineering Corporation in the 1920s, but when it was bought by Keystone Aircraft Corporation and the operations moved from New York City to Pennsylvania, Grumman and his partners (Ed Poor,, Jake Swirbul, and) started their own company in an old factory in Baldwin on Long Island.
Grumman's first jet plane, the F9F Panther, became operational in 1949, but the company's big post-war successes came in the 1960s with the A-6 Intruder and in the 1970s with the F-14 Tomcat.

Grumman mortgaged his house, and Swirbul's mother borrowed $6,000 to set up Grumman Aeronautical Engineering Co. Schwendler joined them, along with two other men who would be the company's inner circle of management for the next 50 years: Ed Poor and E Clinton Towl.

Grumman Corporation: From Beginnings Through World War II The Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation of Bethpage, New York, was one of the most important builders of military aircraft in the 20th century.
Grumman had a close relationship with the Navy, but by the mid 1930s, company officials were worried about the firm's sole reliance on military business and decided to also design planes for the commercial market.
Grumman's first major warplane was the innovative F4F Wildcat, a single-seat, single-engine, carrier-based strike fighter equipped with a unique Grumman invention called "sto-wings, which allowed a plane's wings to fold in half for easy storage on cramped aircraft carriers.

Grumman was forced to plead with the government for changes in the contract before the Tomcat drove the company out of business, and the government did agree to modify the terms.
Grumman also proposed several cost-reduced Tomcat variants to the Navy, with designations such as "F-14T", "F-14X", and "F-14 Optimod", that went nowhere as well, and a dedicated reconnaissance variant, the "RF-14", was dropped in favor of the Tomcat-TARPS solution.
