Topic: Grundy NewBrain

Grundy NewBrain - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Grundy NewBrain was a microcomputer sold in the early-1980s by Grundy Business Systems Ltd of Teddington and Cambridge, England.
When it became obvious to Sinclair that the NewBrain could not be made for the sub-£100 price he envisaged his thoughts turned to the ZX80 that was to be developed by his other company, Science of Cambridge Ltd.
The NewBrain project was moved to Newbury Laboratories by the National Enterprise Board (NEB), the owner of both Sinclair Radionics and Newbury Labs.

The decline in fortune of what was one of Sir Clive Sinclair's earliest companies, led to a major investment by the NEB (National Enterprise Board), who as time went on, increasingly controlled the company, which eventually prompted Sinclair to leave.
Grundy in their original Newbrain Beginner's Guide unfortunately gave reference to the availability of an expansion unit, enabling vast quantaties of memory (up to 2Mb of paged RAM), a disc interface and the aforementioned battery pack.
I have subsequently repaired two more Newbrains, using the same method, that is to replace the two 10 microFarad capacitors controlling the reset circuit.

There were three Newbrain models, the A, AD and M. Newbrain A had no built-in VFD screen (but a fl plastic patch where the screen should be); Newbrain AD had the VFD screen but no battery pack; and Newbrain M was a Newbrain AD sold with the battery pack.
This left Newbrain in obscurity, which is a pity as it was a good machine with a very interesting pedigree.
One of the Newbrain's main features was its adaptability to different languages and locales.

At one time, the NewBrain was in line to be the BBC computer, but design problems and the change in ownership caused the BBC to look elsewhere.

Quite why the NEB moved Newbrain development to Newbury Labs I haven't found out yet.
Roll forward a bit and we find that Newbury Labs seemed to be the BBC's (the corporation, not the machine) sole supplier for their forthcoming BBC Micro and their TV series on computing ("The Computer Programme").
In common with most other machines of the day, the prototype Newbrain was a Z80 based machine with 32K RAM and pretty smart graphics capabilities.
