Grupo Gay da Bahia and the Salvador Transvestites Association held demonstrations in front of the Military Police barracks, resulting in the arrest and discharge from employment of the four alleged military assassins who are currently in prison awaiting trial.
Grupo Gay da Bahia has documented the murders of 1,600 homosexuals from 1980 to 1997, out of which only 5% have resulted in trials.

The report by Grupo Gay da Bahia -- scheduled for release Wednesday -- says 132 homosexuals were killed in 2001 during violent acts targeting gays.
Between 1980 and 2001, GGB says 2,092 gays in Brazil were killed in hate crimes, an average of 104 deaths a year.
According to the study, Pernambuco state and the country's federal district, Brasilia, are the most dangerous places for gays, as they recorded the highest rate of homosexuals killed through violent acts per person.

The beach at Porto da Barra has an area -- towards the right-hand side as one faces the water -- with a gay "reputation", and the beach Praia dos Artistas in Boca do Rio likewise is known as a gay redoubt.
There is a stretch of gay bars in an alley called Beco dos Artistas, which itself is located across the street from Teatro Castro Alves; that would be across from the right-hand side of the Teatro as one faces it.
