Grymes Hill, Staten Island - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Grymes Hill is a neighborhood, situated upon a hill by that name, on Staten Island.
The hill is named after Suzette Bosque Grymes, the widow of Louisiana 's first governor, William Charles Cole Claiborne, who settled on Staten Island in 1836 (she had remarried a prominent New Orleans lawyer, John R. Grymes, after Governor Claiborne died in 1817).
Grymes Hill is best noted currently for being the home of two institutions of higher learning: Wagner College, and the Staten Island campus of St.

Wagner College is intimately connected to Grymes Hill, the community to which it belongs today, and its history is tied to that of the borough of Staten Island and the city of New York.
Looking out over the harbor of New York from Grymes Hill today, it is easy to imagine why so many of New York's wealthiest families chose this location on which to build their estates and country homes.
And in fact, Grymes Hill derives its name from the first of these residents to settle here, Suzette Grymes, who called her mansion Capo di Monte and who built two great homes for her son and daughter along Howard Avenue.

Staten Island Expressway - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The construction of the Staten Island Expressway was particularly noted for the massive movement of earth required to build the section of the highway between Clove Road and Price Street (now Narrows Road North, a service road of the expressway) between Grymes Hill and Emerson Hill.
The earth removed from the cut in the hill was placed in a remote section of central Staten Island adjacent to Sea View Hospital and has since been nicknamed "Moses Mountain," as a backhanded compliment to the highway's builder.
Originally Moses intended for a spur of the expressway to follow the central ridge of the island, to connect with the Outerbridge Crossing.
