 Kultura polska: Grzegorz Fitelberg
Grzegorz Fitelberg za swoją działalność artystyczną został odznaczony Orderem Krzyża Oficerskiego Polonia Restituta (1928), Orderem Złotego Krzyża Zasługi (1932), Orderem Komandorii z Gwiazdą Polonia Restituta (1947) i Orderem Sztandaru Pracy I klasy (1950).
Wobec młodej muzyki polskiej Fitelberg spełniał rolę prawdziwej instytucji propagandowej, bez której trudno byłoby twórcom w owym czasie rozwinąć swe talenty i zdobyć konieczne doświadczenia.

 Karol Szymanowski Nocturne and Tarantella
In 1939, two years after Szymanowski's death, it was orchestrated by his friend Grzegorz Fitelberg (1879-1953), one of the great Polish conductors of the century.
Fitelberg had conducted the premières of many Szymanowski works and is known to have given the composer practical advice on orchestration early in his career.
This was only one of many Szymanowski works that he arranged for orchestra, a monument to a countryman and age-mate whose stature in the history of music, though long eclipsed by his eastern European contemporaries Stravinsky and Bartók, is now well-nigh unassailable.

Meanwhile the conductor Grzegorz Fitelberg, the composer Ludomir Rozycki, the pianist and composer Apolinary Szeluto, and Karel Szymanowski developed the Young Poland in Music Group for the promotion and publication of new Polish music under the patronage of Prince Wladyslaw Lubomirski.
Fitelberg and Kochanski proved fervent and invaluable supporters of Szymanowski’s efforts and Rubinstein as well as the far more conservative Paderewski both promoted interest in his compositions.
Szymanowski’s Variations on a Polish Folk Theme and Study in B flat minor were performed at the first Young Poland concert in Warsaw and were well received but a similar programme attracted less interest in Berlin.

 Karol Szymanowski - 2. Symphonie B-Dur op. 19
It was first performed by the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by his closest musical colleague and proponent, Grzegorz Fitelberg (1879-1953).
It is hardly surprising therefore that after these experiences Szymanowski and Fitelberg should turn to Vienna, where the former stayed throughout the concert season until the First World War.
Szymanowski and Fitelberg fundamentally revised its orchestration later, between 1927 and 1936.

This year's edition of the Fitelberg competition will be inaugurated with a concert featuring Fitelberg's Song of Falcon, Fourth Symphony (concertante) by Karol Szymanowski and Fifth Symphony by Bolesław Szabelski, performed by the Silesian Philharmonic in Katowice Choir and orchestra.
Since this year is the 50th anniversary of the concert patron's death, the organizers have decided to make the event grander than ever and open an exhibition devoted to Fitelberg and prepared by the Library of the Music Academy in Katowice.

Szymanowski wanted to write a "peasant's requiem." The death of his niece Alusia Bartoszwicz and of industrialist Bronislaw Krystall's wife propelled Szymanowski toward the medieval poem (in Latin) by Jacopone da Todi (that had been memorably set by Rossini and would be set after World War II by Francis Poulenc).
The composer's sister Stanislawa Koorwin-Szymanowski (Alusia's mother) was one of the soloist at the first performance, in which Grzegorz Fitelberg conducted the Warsaw Philharmonic and Chorus.
The Litany to the Virgin Mary (opus 59) was written between 1931 and 1933, and was also premiered by the Warsaw Philharmonic and Chorus conducted by Fitelberg and with Stanislawa Koorwin-Szymanowski as a soloist.

Fitelberg was a conductor who traveled with Arthur Rubinstein in the early teens and twenties.
At the time, the composer Szymansynowski (sic) and Rubinstein were apparently vying for the affections of Godowsky's teenaged daughter, Dagmar, and Fitelberg acted as intermediary.

Classical Net Review - Moniuszko - Overtures & Vocal Works
Some of them rise above this mundanity: the overture to Jawnuta, for example, on the CPO but not the Olympia CD, shows an orchestral imagination that owes something to the welcome influence of Berlioz; and the Halka Overture features music of genuine dramatic punch.
These recordings show what a good conductor Fitelberg was, for he gets a sparkle out of these largely workaday scores that the generally more cautious Robert Satanowski doesn't manage to find.
The other Olympia recordings were made by Witold Rowicki in 1964; he, too, obtains much livelier performances than Satanowski, who, unsurprisingly, has a much better recorded sound for his dragging tempi.
