In 1942, the Battalion set sail from San Diego, CA with the 1st Marine Division to meet the Japanese tide sweeping across the South Pacific.
Elements of the 2nd Amphibian Tractor Battalion participated in assaults on Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Spain, Tinian and Okinawa.
After the surrender of Japan in August of 1945, the battalion returned to the United States and deactivated on 29 November 1945.

From the bloody beaches of Guadalcanal to the jungles of Vietnam, U.S. Naval Mobile Construction Battalion SIX has upheld the Seabee motto - "Can Do!" The first Seabee battalion to work under actual combat conditions was Naval Construction Battalion SIX.
This unit went ashore with the Marines on Guadalcanal in 1942 under the command of Cmdr. Joseph P. Blundon.
After building and fighting on Guadalcanal, Espiritu Santo, Tulagi, Auckland, Noumea and Okinawa, 6th Naval Construction Battalion was decommissioned in October of 1945.

The Japanese landed construction troops on Guadalcanal, an obscure, pestilential island in the southern Solomons, in order to build an airstrip.
The Marines cleared the Japanese troops away from the incomplete airfield, and quickly completed it, naming it Henderson Field, for a Marine aviator who had died gallantly during the Battle of Midway.
In 1942, flying over the island of Guadalcanal, the crew of a B17 reported the Japanese were constructing an airstrip to block the Allied path to Tokyo.

The 161st, along with the rest of the 25th Infantry Division, was alerted for shipment to Guadalcanal to reinforce the American forces already there and to provide sufficient combat strength to allow the US XIV Corps to launch offensive operations to destroy the Japanese forces on the island.
The 35th RCT arrived at Guadalcanal on 17 December 1942, followed by the 27th RCT on 1 January 1943, with the 161st RCT arriving on 4 January 1943.
Because of a feared reinforcement of Japanese forces on Guadalcanal which never came, the 25th Division was ordered to guard the airfields while the 161st Infantry was placed under Corps control and ordered to continue the drive north.
