  BGG Thread: Guadalcanal 1966 review
In our games, we found that the Americans won more often than the Japanese, but this might have been because we were all a lot younger then (I was in high school), and less skilled at taking advantage of a successful attack.
His invasion of Guadalcanal was a defensive measure to prevent the Japanese from operating a nearly completed air base on the island.
The battle on Guadalcanal was vying for resources with the European Theater (Operation Torch in North Africa, Lend Lease to Russia, and the Operation Bolero build up in England) and with McArthur who was engaged in a battle against the Japanese in New Guinea.

Guadalcanal is a stand-alone game; no other game from the series is required to play any of the 24 scenarios.
Guadalcanal includes complete maps of these islands, and scenarios to re-create the intense fighting required to eject the Japanese from them.
Most scenarios in the game hinge on the areas that had to be held to protect the airfield: the Matanikau River line, the Tenaru River, and the line of hills known as Edson’s Ridge.

 Brian McCue's Combined Strategic-Tactical Gaming
Considering the games to be simulations of history, or of possible history, the desire is for a connection between the observable and the important.
A) Two-level games, to include: pre-packaged two-level games [4], standalone games meant to be mated [5], strategic add-ons to tactical games [6], tactical sub-games that are almost worth playing in their own right [7], and post-facto matings of existing games [8], an approach in which I have specialized.
Insofar as the game concerns a roving band of warriors, it is a tactical wargame embedded in a larger campaign.

At first, I thought that this part of the game would be useless in solitaire play, but I was wrong.
I filled out the forms just to see what it entailed, and, after playing the game, I realized that it was an extremely effective solitaire technique whose most interesting feature was its representation of command decision cycles.
When you do finally hit something there is a satisfying impact on the game, and there is the tangential effect of developing strong wrists while doing so.

GUADALCANAL DIARY + WING AND A PRAYER - DVDs
Filmed just months after the actual invasion of Guadalcanal late in 1942 and based on Richard Tregaskis' wildly popular (but excessively jingoistic and poorly written) memoir of the same, Guadalcanal Diary is interesting for a glimpse at the Hollywood propaganda machine of WWII if not for any other reason.
With predictable inflammatory dialogue and plotting and broad burlesque performances by a gaggle of recognizable character actors in familiar stereotypes, Guadalcanal Diary is a rush job notable today for an early appearance by Anthony Quinn, in a role as the token ethnic fellow meant to inspire volunteerism in the barrio.
Their task is to hold the island and beachhead for the Army to land and establish a presence in what would become the first in a series of leapfrog beachheads projected to one day lead to an amphibious assault on Japan itself.

Guadalcanal was the location of some of the fiercest fighting throughout the pacific.
The rest of the game consists of the same type of missions as Guadalcanal with increasing numbers of enemies and slightly different objectives.
On that note, between major campaigns the game includes actual historical footage of events like Guadalcanal, Pearl Harbor, etc. These movies add a lot to the game; they remind you that although you can just turn it off, or restart, that was not how real life went.

The U.S. Marine 1st Division landed on Guadalcanal at the foot of the Solomon Islands, grabbing its strategic (Henderson) airfield in August 1942, and what ensued was a desperate and bloody battle of attrition for that island, lasting 6 months.
Guadalcanal finally showed that the previously irresistible Imperial Japanese Army and marines could indeed be stopped and beaten, with adequate command and air and sea support.
This game is eminently playable, although sometimes derisively called "dice at sea." Solomons campaign: air, land, and sea warfare, Pacific, 1942.

Simply put, the units will start the game in one of two ways: either they will be placed on a specific hex at the beginning of the game or they will enter the game map from a specific side (or even hex) where the originally entered the area.
If their game components (size of the map, number of playing pieces) are not adequate to the level of detail they have in mind, they're going to have big problems and the game is not going to work.
In a case such as this you might overlook the fact that games are very susceptible to the smallest problem in the rules or the game system becoming a critical impediment to the game's working.

A Guadalcanal Chronology & Order of Battle
Thus, although many think of Guadalcanal in terms of the land battles, there were more naval battles fought off the island in six months than the British Royal Navy fought in all of World War I. There is nothing else quite like them in even the rest of World War II.
In popular culture, the naval war off Guadalcanal gets less attention than the land war, even though the intensity of naval fighting was extraordinary and the fate of the land campaign depended absolutely on its outcome.
Madej does not give details of unit organization for Japanese forces on Guadalcanal, and, indeed, such details may not even be known, considering the attrition suffered in their delivery and the chaotic conditions that prevailed in the command on site.

This was to be in the game, as in history, critical as the first detection of the Japanese was made by the Fletcher-class DD O'Bannon, but the signal reporting this to the CinC was delayed and confused.
Leaving the DD action astern, they boldly turned west towards Guadalcanal, and at such short ranges, their massed 6" and 8" guns were able to penetrate the belt armor of the two BBs, who could only respond with secondary fire as the gun crews worked furiously to load AP ammo.

Task Force 1942 for DOS - MobyGames
This game deals with the desperate battles fought in the Solomon Islands, specifically in and around the island of Guadalcanal, in which the Allies tried to stop the Japanese from their drive to Australia.
Your main objective is to keep the marines on Guadalcanal supplied and bring reinforcements to them, to shell the enemy base, and to stop the enemy from bringing supplies and reinforcements to their troops.
The game has a strategic mode in which you can order your fleets around and monitor the overall situation, and a tactical mode in which two fleets meet and you can actually command the battle in real-time and "jump into" any ship and fire the guns or torpedos.

The only really noticeable change to game’s tactical side is the addition of air attacks and off-board arty, something fans have been begging for since the first Close Combat.
