A Guadalcanal Chronology & Order of Battle
It skipped over the Battle of the Tenaru River in August and did not provide a scenario for the November offensive that the Japanese would have mounted if so many of their forces and supplies had not been sunk at sea after the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal (12-14 November 1942).
The intensity of the battles at sea and on land was due in great part to the rough equality of the forces involved.
The five battles in the waters off Guadalcanal, which include the two nights of the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, are listed in sequence to the left of the island.

Operation Watchtower: The Battle for Guadalcanal (August 1942-February 1943)
Guadalcanal was the first battle in the American amphibious campaign to liberate the Pacific from Japanese occupation.
Both Japanese and American forces fought the battle (one of the longest in the Pacific War) at the farthest end of their respective supply lines and in a terrain and climate that was hostile to both sides.
Prior to the campaign on Guadalcanal there was little known about the island, except that it would be difficult to conduct operations as it was covered by dense tropical rain forest, mountains, deep rivers and swamps and its climate is unforgiving with oppressive heat, humidity, rains and mud.

The Battle of Cape Esperance did nothing, however, to discourage the Japanese effort to evict the Marines from Guadalcanal, and the ground fighting was to reach its climax between October 14th.
When the main carrier battle was joined the Japanese carrier Shokaku was so badly damaged that she was to be out of action for nine months, but the Japanese strike on the US carriers then overwhelmed the fighter defences, and both Hornet and Enterprise were hit.
After the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal the Japanese command lost confidence in their ability to retake the island and began to think in terms of developing New Georgia, to the north of Guadalcanal, as a bastion to thwart the American advance in the Solomons.

The Battle of Savo Island was one of the sharpest reverses suffered by the US navy in the war.
After failing to dislodge the American marines from Guadalcanal immediately after the initial landing, the Japanese gathered a large fleet of warships including two battleships and the aircraft carriers Zuikaku, Shokaku and Ryujo to cover the landing of reinforcements which were to take part in an attempt to expel the Americans from Guadalcanal.

And in order to assure the delivery of those supplies, they assembled a very powerful force, centered on the battleships Hiei and Kirishima, whose job would be to bombard Henderson Field into impotence.
The stage was set for another brutal battle just two nights later.
