Guadalupe Island lies 150 miles offshore of the Pacific coast of Mexico, south of San Diego and west northwest of Punta Eugenia on the Baja California peninsula.
Guadalupe is bathed by oceanic currents so its marine life includes pelagic animals such as pilot whales, Cuvier's beaked whales, oceanic whitetip sharks, bluefin and yellowfin tuna and strange gelatinous zooplankton.
In fact, Guadalupe is a both a Mexican Bio-Sphere Reserve and a pinniped sanctuary and was the last refuge for the Northern elephant seal (Mirounga angustirostris) and the Guadalupe fur seal (Arctocephalus townsendi).

The island is inhabited by abalone and lobster fishermen and their homes are in Camp East, where the dwellings and boats are protected from the strong winter winds and heavy seas by a beautiful bay.

Guadalupe fur seals tend to stay near shore and breed in caves on Guadalupe Island rather than on open beaches.
Scientists did not know what a living Guadalupe fur seal looked like until 1928, when a few dozen fur seals were discovered on Guadalupe Island, two of which were brought to the San Diego Zoo.
Guadalupe fur seals are now protected by law in the United States and in Mexico, and Guadalupe Island has been designated a pinniped (seal and sea lion) sanctuary.
