The river is extremely scenic, and a sufficient water flow for recreational use exists throughout its entire length, with the exception of the extreme upper reaches.
However, the river is extremely narrow and shallow, and conditions are not conducive for recreational use until the river reaches the vicinity of Comfort and Waring.
This 22-mile section of the Guadalupe River in Kendall and Comal Counties is one of the most scenic stretches of river in Texas, and has been the subject of intense study by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department ("Pathways and Paddleways").

The river on the upstream side of the crossing is dammed and reaches a depth of 30 feet.

Guadalupe River State Park (830-438-2656) is located on river right about 8 miles below FM 3351 (access is off SH 46 between Bergheim and Bulverde) and offers improved and primitive campgrounds, RV facilities, toilets, showers, water, electricity, nature trails, river access, picnic areas and many other amenities.
Camping along the river may be done on private property, but ONLY with the advance permission of the landowners on whose property you would be camping.
I highly recommend this river for anybody wanting to experience the joys of canoeing and kayaking, though it is somewhat less suitable for rafting and tubing than the Lower Guad due to the distance between put-in and take-out points (for tubers) and the general lack of any fast-moving water which makes rafting fun.

I requested that the County release the river to boating, as the level of around 6000 cfs, while high, has been boated many times in the past by competent and experienced boaters.
Most people I know, if they run the river at high water, put in at FM 306 anyway, so this debris at the dam is of no consequence to boaters.
As with other conditions outlined in the emergency order, the river is not currently flooding at the 35,000+ cfs of earlier this month.

The river closing is for the ENTIRE river in Comal County, above and below the dam NOT just the Lower Guadalupe.
The upper river is gorgeous, and doesn't have the problems the lower has (no dam, so they build their houses back out of the secondary river channel).
Also, the Guadalupe Blanco River Authority shut the in all of Comal and Guadalupe Counties, until 7/20/02.

AUSTIN (AP) - The floods that poured over the spillway of Canyon Lake on the Fourth of July weekend gouged a new path to the Guadalupe River and caused damage estimated at $87 million.
Former Dallas police officer Mike McDonald had just finished his dream house along the Guadalupe River and was settling into retirement when the floods came.
He is rebuilding, but it has wiped out his savings and saddled him with what amounts to a second mortgage from a low-interest federal loan.
