Guaiacol production by vanillic acid decarboxylation is an attribute of some plant and soil saprophytes (Crawford and Olson, 1978) which will be ingested with the food plant, so locust faecal pellets will always contain guaiacol though the bacterial species producing it may differ.
It is intriguing to note that guaiacol was implicated as a kairomone for another parasitoid Microplitis demolitor; though the origin of the compound in the faeces of the soybean looper host (Pseudoplusia includens; Ramachandran et al, 1991) was not determined.

The compound is made by the bacterium Pantoea agglomerans which lives in the insects' guts, and according to Rod Dillon at the University of Bath, UK, this volatile chemical component is one component of a pheromone found in desert-locust faecal pellets thought to trigger swarming behaviour.
Guaiacol is probably biosynthesised from the lignin-derived vanillic acid (4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzoic acid) in the locusts' diet.
Alternatively, we could use guaiacol or the whole pheromone to trigger them to swarm when no food is available and so bump up their mortality rate.

Guaiacol is a phenolic natural product first isolated from Guaiac resin and the oxidation of lignin.
Guaiacol is readily oxidized by the heme iron of peroxidases including the peroxidase of cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes.
Two moles of guaiacol are oxidized for each mole of hydroperoxide reduced by the peroxidase.

As the literature recommended, Guaiacol was also found to be a good substrate, particularly for a buffer near pH 7.
The optimization of pH and vegetable extract were easily found to be pH 7 and a radish extract as expected, however there is a great deal of further exploration to be done on the optimization of the peroxidase enzyme.

concentration on reaction rate, the guaiacol concentration now must be reduced to a level close to that of the catechol, so that we can detect the competition of the two.

Examination of harmful bacterium in food or drink patent invention
There is disclosed a method for detecting bacteria capable of producing guaiacol, which comprises culturing or incubating a culture solution containing a specimen for a predetermined time in the presence of vanillic acid, and measuring the produced guaiacol by qualitative or quantitative analysis.
Also there is disclosed a kit for detection of bacteria capable of producing guaiacol, comprising a container, and an acid or neutral culture medium containing a vanillic acid substrate for production of guaiacol, which is contained in the container and also sterilized and sealed.
It also discloses that, since acidophilic spore-forming bacteria converts vanillin into guaiacol and guaiacol emits a strong odor, the presence of acidophilic spore-forming bacteria in a test sample can be detected within a short time without confirming the formation of colony by adding a test sample such as fruit juice in a vanillin-containing medium.

Re: In the guiacol-peroxidase reaction, is guaiacol an actual substrate ?
Guaiacol (also known as 2-methoxyphenol) is a "natural" (I say natural because it was first isolated from Guaiac resin) peroxidase substrate that some plants produce in response to oxidative damage.
It serves as a reducing substrate in the reduction of hydrogen peroxide, and is oxidized by the heme co-factor of peroxidases.
So, guaiacol really is a substrate of peroxidase.
