GUAIACUM - LoveToKnow Article on GUAIACUM   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Its important preparations in the British Pharmacopoeia are the mistura gwiaci (dose 1/2-I oz.), the ammoniated tincture of guaiacum (dose 1/2-f drachm), in which the resin is dissolved by means of ammonia, and the trochiscus or lozenge, containing 3 grains of the resin.
Guaiacum resin differs pharmacologically from other resins in being less irritant, so that it is absorbed from the bowel and exerts remote stimulant actions, notably upon the skin and kidneys.
The tincture of guaiacum is universally used as a test for the presence of blood, or rather of haemoglobin, the red coloring matter of the blood, in urine or other secretions.

Guaiacum wood, also known as Lignum vitae, a name given to it from a belief that its medicinal virtues were of a superior kind, is largely imported into this country from the West Indies for making block-sheaves, wooden pestles, and many other objects, for which it is peculiarly fitted by its extraordinary hardness and toughness.
Guaiacum wood is only odorous when burned or rasped, the odor being aromatic; its taste is acrid, aromatic, and amarous, succeeded by a pricking in the throat.

Is Guaiacum sanctum Effective Against Arthritis? An Ethnobotany Case - Part I - Case Study Collection - National Center ...
Beth Tonoany is a tropical population ecologist who has been studying an unusual tree, Guaiacum sanctum, which once grew throughout the dry tropical forests of Central America as well as on some of the Caribbean islands.
Guaiacum sanctum produces a wood called lignum vitae, and is known in Costa Rica and other Spanish-speaking countries as guayacan reál.
Tonoany encouraged her graduate student, Mabel Gailke, to determine if Guaiacum sanctum produces a chemical that has anti-inflammatory properties: “We have lots of anecdotal evidence that lignum vitae is useful in treating rheumatism, arthritis, and gout, but it’s frustrating that there is absolutely no data to support these claims.

Guaiacum spp.: Mexico responded to a document prepared by TRAFFIC North America on the status of lignum vitae or tree of life (Guaiacum) research in Mexico, stating that further work is needed on Guaiacum coulteri and on non-detriment findings.
In order to address “look-alike” issues, he suggested that all species of Guaiacum be listed on Appendix II to curb trade in those that are endangered.
The CITES Secretariat suggested other options might be to undertake a significant trade review of the species or ask range States about what other measures they can take to prevent unsustainable trade in species, such as implementing quotas.

 MEEC 2005, Evolution/Phylogenetics
The goal of this research is to use comparative DNA sequence analysis to understand the taxonomic boundaries, genetic structure, and geographical distribution of Guaiacum.
The establishment of distinct evolutionary lineages in plants can be complicated given their capacity for hybridization and introgression; which often poses problems to the traditional separations of systematics, population genetics, and phylogeography.
These problems may be overcome; and analysis of multiple loci of highly variable DNA sequences may elucidate the roles of both historic and contemporary genetic exchange among Guaiacum species and populations, thereby identifying distinct genetic lineages of conservation concern as well as providing insight into their evolution.
