  USS Guams CB-2
The second Guam (CB-2) was launched 12 November 1943 by the New York Shipbuilding Corp., Camden, N.J.; sponsored by Mrs George Johnson McMillan, wife of Captain McMillan, former governor of Guam; and commissioned 17 September 1944, Captain Leland P. Lovette in command.
Guam now got a new assignment as flagship of Cruiser Task Force 95, composed of large cruisers Guam and Alaska, four light cruisers, and nine destroyers This force steamed into the East China and Yellow Seas between 16 July and 7 August 1945 on a shipping raid.
Guam departed Jinsen 14 November and reached San Francisco 3 December landing a contingent of Army troops for discharge.

USS Guam, the second large cruiser of the 27,500-ton Alaska class, was built at Camden, New Jersey, and was commissioned in September 1944.
Guam provided anti-aircraft protection during a carrier raid on the Japanese home islands in March 1945 and then fired a shore bombardment mission and supported carrier operations during the Okinawa campaign.
After the Japanese surrender Guam showed the flag off the major ports in the Yellow Sea and at Jinsen (Inchon), Korea, before returning to the United States in December 1945.

Laid down on February 2, 1942; launched on November 21, 1943 and commissioned on September 17, 1944, the Guam carried a main armament of nine 12 inch main guns mounted three per turret; two centerline superfiring forward and one centerline aft.
Guam escorted the big flattops in their sweeps across the western Pacific from March 1945 through the end of the war.
Guam was decommissioned in 1947 and remained in mothballs until struck from the Naval Vessel Register on June 1, 1960.

Guam participated in may evaluations and tests throughout the next few years and on July 1, 1974, Guam completed the ISCS evaluation and was redesignated Amphibious Assault Ship.
While deployed to the Mediterranean in May, 1982, Guam was sent to the coast of Lebanon to prepare for possible evacuation operationsor intervention in the war raging between the Israelies and opposing Palestinian and Syrian forces.
Guam was instrumental in the recovery of one of the rocket booster nose cones which was able to be loaded on to the flight deck and returned for inspection.

I joined the uss guam in the pacific,and was assigned to the fifth division,in the magazine hold, i was on board,when we were sent back to bayone,after the war ended, my son jeff was the one who informed me about the website and just knew of the reunions.
As a third grader, my tour on the Guam was something I remember to this day even though she was moored at Bayonne NJ at the time.
I served on the Guam from its commissioning in Sept 1944 til it was mothballed in 1946.

On 2 and 3 June, the task force launched air strikes on the Japanese home islands — -aimed particularly at Kyushu, the southernmost of the major islands.
On 2 July, the oath of office of Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Air was administered to John L. Sullivan on board Shangri-La, the first ceremony of its type ever undertaken in a combat zone.
On 2 September 1956, the second day of the National Air Show, Lt. (j.g.) R. Carson, flying an F3H-2N Demon of VF-124, captured the McDonnell Trophy with a non-stop, non-refueling flight from Shangri-La off the coast of San Francisco to Oklahoma City.

On the night of 27 March to 28 March 1945 Admiral P. Low's Cruiser Division 16 in Guam conducted bombardment of the airfield on Minami Daito.

Assigned to Transport Division 2 with Amphibious Forces, Pacific Fleet, Almaack underwent repairs and alterations at the Craig Shipbuilding Co. at Long Beach, before she returned to San Diego on 15 July for landing exercises off the southern California coast.
For six days, from W + 2 to W + 8, Almaack supported the invasion of Guam; the first three days she retired at night after conducting unloading operations during the day, returning the following morning to the transport area to resume working her cargo.
She remained there until 6 February, when she sailed for Guam to load elements of the 3d Marine Division in preparation for what would prove to be the last amphibious operation for Almaack in the war-the assault on Iwo Jima.

Here she received Navy CB stevedoring personnel for Noumea, New Caledonia, where she arrived on 27 August 1945, departing thence for Espiritu Santo and arriving there on the 31st.
