  Curassows and guans
The guans, curassows, and chachalacas (together known as cracids) are an ancient family whose closest relatives may be the megapodes of Australasia.
The guans seem to me to be much more arboreal than curassows, and most of those I've seen have been up in trees (often a fruiting tree).
The White-winged Guan Penelope albipennis of arid scrub in northwestern Peru was thought to be extinct until rediscovered in 1977.

  Guan - LoveToKnow 1911
GUAN, a word apparently first introduced into the ornitho logist's vocabulary about 1743 by Edwards,' who said that a bird he figured (Nat.
Uncommon Birds, pl. xiii.) was "so called in the West Indies," and the name has hence been generally applied to all the members of the subfamily Penelopinae, which are distinguished from the kindred subfamily Cracinae or curassows by the broad postacetabular area of the pelvis as pointed out by Huxley (Proc.
Into their minute differences it would be useless to enter: nearly all have the throat bare of feathers, and from that of many of them hangs a wattle; but one form, Chamaepetes, has neither of these features, and Stegnolaema, though wattled, has the throat clothed.

 3.6 Cracids
Habitat: All guans are strictly forest-dwellers, preferring wet, high, primary forest from the tropical belt to the Andean forests (18, 70, 215, 232, 383).
Abundance: Guan are apparently fairly abundant in undisturbed habitats, to judge from the hunting records and literature (153, 336, 383, 519), but scarce in environmentally modified areas where they are under steady hunting pressure.
Reproduction: Guan are monogamous and territorial, mating at the onset of the rainy season, usually March-July north of the equator.

rimarily tree-living birds, crested guans forage in small groups up in the treetops, walking slowly along the branches and leaping across gaps.
While in flight, the bird begins to beat its wings at twice the normal speed, producing a whirring sound that is maintained for several seconds.
The usual clutch is 2 or 3 eggs, and the female guan does most of the incubation.

CNN.com - Nature - Bird project soars at St. Louis Zoo - November 22, 2000
Relying on impregnation techniques commonly used in the domestic poultry industry, Macek and colleagues hatched two common piping guans, the first members of the cracid family to be bred through artificial insemination.
Although the zoo project involves common piping guans, which are not at risk, it could serve as a model for future artificial insemination projects for the birds' endangered cousins.
The zoo plans to establish a supply of frozen guan semen, which would enable scientists to exchange artificial insemination techniques to zoos in Central or South American countries where there is better access to endangered cracid species.

The guan is a secretive and cryptic species, and is usually seen only in fleeting glimpses.

El Triunfo, March, 2005 - birding tours, birding cruises - Victor Emanuel Nature Tours
Unlike any other member of the family Cracidae in appearance and behavior, the Horned Guan is restricted to isolated cloud forests in southwestern Chiapas and adjacent Guatemala.
In addition to breaking records for Horned Guan sightings, we also recorded a record high number of species for the tour, thanks to an exceptionally skilled and diligent group of participants.
New species added to the tour include Spotted Rail (no kidding--in a roadside pond on the way to Jaltenango), Dickcissel (no doubt on their way home from Argentina to Nebraska), and a fly-over of the El Triunfo clearing by a Brown Pelican (go figure!).
