Topic: Guanzi

  Guanzi or Bili
The Chinese guanzi or bili is a cylindrical double reed, related to the western and central Asian duduk, duduki, and bili of Eastern Europe, Persia, Armenia, and Georgia.
The guanzi is still played in a number of musical styles and especially those that contain remnants of Tang court music such as some Buddhist and Taoist music, and in the wind and percussion groups of Xi'an, the modern city built on the site of the ancient Chinese court of Chang'an.
The wooden guanzi is usually made from a type of rosewood with 7 finger holes and one to two thumb-holes.

There are three main reed instruments, the suona and guanzi both having double reeds and the sheng free reeds.
The guanzi is a form of keyless oboe, while the sheng (better known, perhaps, by its Japanese name of shoo) consists of an air-chest to which are fitted a number of vertical pipes.
The sheng has been extensively modernised (though the form the modernisation should take is still a matter of debate), and in one or other of its modernised forms it is found in all Han orchestras.

Robinet explains that allusions to the “spirit of the valley,” and the “obscure female” in the Dao De Jing are thought to be references to longevity practices.
Also like Laozi and Zhuangzi, Guanzi says the path to this philosophical enlightenment is through “correcting the body” with various meditative practices.
Guanzi shows the crucial connection of philosophy and religious practices when he says, “regularity of breath is tied to peacefulness of the heart.” Robinet explains that philosophical theories have specific rituals and practices to achieve them.

In addition to the controversial connection to the Songs of Chu, the Guanzi (350-250 BCE) is a text older than both the Daodejing and probably all of the Zhuangzi, except the "inner chapters" (see below).
Indeed, there is a strong meditative trend in the Daoism of late imperial China known as the "inner alchemy" tradition and the views of the Neiye seem to be in the background of this movement.
Two other chapters of the Guanzi are called Xin shu (Heart-mind book).
