Guanacaste National Park: Created in 1989, Guanacaste National Park was declared with the principal intention of forming a biological corridor to connect Santa Rosa National Park with high elevation cloud forest and Caribbean slope rain forest.
National park status was given to the area in 1975 to protect both the paramo habitat (the largest extent of this vegetation type found in Costa Rica) and the oak forests below.
When the park was created in 1975, the few miners that were working inside the newly formed boundaries were permitted to stay since their activities were seen as being beneficial to the national economy.

Guanacaste National Park in Costa Rica, for example, is said to add approximately $200,000 per year to the local economy from research projects through purchase of supplies, employment of local assistants, and general contributions to the economy.
Parks that provide a valuable service such as water supplies for downstream cities can collect user fees by such means as a tax or levy on water or electricity users, or at the very least, use these services as a justification for national budget appropriation requests.
To the extent permitted by national law, as many as possible of the sources of income to protected areas should be made proprietary -- that is, legally restricted in their use to the national park system or the specific protected area where they are collected.

Professor Dan Janzen gave an extremely interesting presentation about the restoration of Guanacaste National park in Costa Rica, which is a very similar environment to 40 Mile.
June a large group of TREAT members visited the Forty Mile Scrub National Park to see the projects being undertaken by QPWS to overcome the enormous threat posed by the spread of lantana.
This garden is to be known as "The Australian National Tropical Botanic Garden at Mareeba." It is to be a truly national symbol to enhance the development of our cultural identity within the natural environment of Tropical Australia.
