The organisers, the Guangdong Department of Education and the Cultural and Education Section of the British Consulate-General (The British Council) encouraged the students to “stand out and speak out”, the theme of the event.
Xie Rui from Guangdong University of Foreign Studies was the ultimate winner of the speaking contest.

The fall term of 2003 was a break-through semester at Guangdong University of Foreign Studies.
When I arrived at the university last October, the students in my news-reporting and writing class were assigned at my insistence to an underused news lab, a two-room suite with about 24 PCs in each room.
Guangdong U. does not have this system, although I was surprised and pleased to learn the administration is looking into getting similar software.

Weihe Zhong is the Dean of the Faculty of English Language and Culture, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, P.R.China.
He has one master's degree in literature translation from Nanjing Normal University and another one in interpreting and translation studies from the University of Westminster, the U.K. He is Vice Chairman of Guangzhou Translators' Association and council member of China Translators' Association.
Foreign missionaries dominated scientific and technical translation initially, but Chinese translators, trained in China or at foreign universities, gradually took over the transmission of western knowledge.

The general results have shown significant differences across different types of tasks for all the nine measures adopted to measure learner performance in the study, suggesting that different types of tasks did lead to varied performances.
The study has shown that though L2 writing can be affected by multiple factors, conceptual and linguistic demands are the two internal elements capable of accounting for and predicting a large part of performance tendencies in L2 writing.
The study also suggests that L2 writing is special in that linguistic problems may affect not only the linguistic formulating process, but also the whole writing process.
