Guantanamera   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
As bittersweet and gently ambling as the traditional ballad of its title, Guantanamera, the final film from the late Tom‡s GutiŽrrez Alea (with Juan Carlos Tabio), celebrates life, loss, love, and mortality -- a fitting farewell from the director of Memories of Underdevelopment and Strawberry and Chocolate.
Suffused with the ethereal light of the Cuban countryside and brimming with the warmth, vigor, and tenacity of its people, Guantanamera is a hymn to passion, tolerance, and faith with only an occasional sentimental sour note.
Whenever Mariano deceives a roadside one-night stand, or Georgina submits to Adolfo's abuse and insensitivity, a detour crops up in their course, ending in another chance meeting between the two, another recognition that what's missing from their lives is each other.

 Guantanamera
Guantanamera!, the final film by Cuban filmmaker Tomás Gutiérrez Alea, is a dazzling "socio-drama," engaging and paying homage to his country on numerous levels.
And what a career epilogue it is, exploring personal and political issues with an ease attained despite the collaboration of three screenwriters as well as the co-direction of his longtime partner, Juan Carlos Tabio (Alea's collaborator on several films, including Strawberry and Chocolate).
The movie's mirth begins when Aunt Yoyita (Conchita Brando), on her return to the town of Guantanamera, is reunited with her first love Candido (Raúl Eguren) after 50 years' detachment from both.

 Guantanamera
That's the cheerful message of "Guantanamera," a good-naturedly shambling romantic comedy with an acidic political undertow.
On the lighter side, it begins with the story of Yoyita, a famous Cuban singer who returns from Havana to her hometown of Guantanamera after 50 years and rushes to the home of her long-lost sweetheart, Candido (Raul Eguren), whom she intuits still carries a torch.
"Guantanamera" has the structure of a folk song, with its episodes strung together by fragments of the Pete Seeger-Hector Angulo folk hit from which the movie takes its title.

"Guantanamera" means the woman from Guantanamo (the town, not the U.S. base).
The main butt of its criticism is Adolfo, that misguided, counterproductive, symbolic, ambitious, egotistic and silly bureaucrat.
"Guantanamera" was nominated for the Golden Lion at the 1996 Venice Film Festival and honored at several others.

The puzzle is that it has the imprimatur of Castro's regime, while driving the last nail in the idea of the New Man. It's more proof, if more is needed, that nearly four decades of propaganda has convinced almost no one of anything.
"Guantanamera" has a predictable plot and an ending that a child could foresee, with a trifling bit of magical realism tacked on, but that's almost beside the point.
"Guantanamera" actually goes a step farther, suggesting that amidst Cuba's crumbling socialist infrastructure, the only reasonable thing to do is to grab whatever you can — every man and woman for themselves.

 Guantanamera
A hearse-led road trip across Cuba's lush tropical countryside and cluttered urban areas is the main plot element in "Guantanamera." Yoyita, a famed ex-patriot, returns to her homeland after many years to be celebrated for her triumphs away from home.
And throughout, the song "Guantanamera" (Girl from Guantanamo) is lyrically molded to suit the story, becoming part of the script in ingenious ways.
A lovely film, for all audiences - in any language - this is an example of the great Cuban cinema's powerhouse director Tomas Gutierez Alea, and stands as a triumph of spirit, love and passion much like other love stories that have been told in English over the years.

deseretnews.com - Movie review: Guantanamera | Deseret Morning News Web edition
Admittedly, "Guantanamera" is a charming road movie, a low-key comedy that manages to touch equally on romance and politics.
But it does come as a real surprise from Alea, whose films (including 1995's Oscar-nominated "Strawberry & Chocolate") usually centered on current Cuban politics.
"Guantanamera" is not rated but would probably receive an R for profanity, some violence, brief nudity and some vulgar references.
