Topic: Guapo

  El Guapo in DC
The most Guapo man in all of DC.
Although Guatemalans are known to be visited by saints and the such, this is just the case of a statue.
A large group of mis amigos were at a bar yesterday when one of the most beautiful women I’ve ever seen sat two seats down from me. Her hair was dark and straight, her eyes were a faded blue and her lips were pouting for something.

Guapo were formed in London in 1994, and released three singles + one album on their own Power Tool before they started working with the French-based label Pandemonium Rdz.
Guapo have toured Europe five times, and will spend much of 1998/1999 supporting the release of their new album "Hirohito" by touring their astonishing live show (often including odd performing) in France, England, Germany, Slovenia, Italy, Norway, Denmark and numerous other countries.
Where others are spilling their seed on barren soil, GUAPO are cultivating the fertile ground between Xenakis and ZZ Top, John Cage and Judas Priest, Merzbow and Motley Crue.

Guapo is incredibly brave and I'm happy to report, he now voluntarily eats fresh, organic broccoli, apples, parsley, peas (sometimes), kale, and dandelion greens.
Guapo took a liking to a swing with leather strips and beads on it, and it was the first toy he played with...after watching him hop on and off the swing, swooshing wildly back and forth, seemingly with a huge grin on his face, I realized that Guapo loves toys that move.
Guapo plays briefly with several toys and can be seen hopping from one swing to one perch to another swing, etc...he has boundless energy, bouncing all over the inside and outside of the cage, settling at last for a BIG NAP.

 Ipecac Recordings - Guapo
Guapo is a force of nature; an infinitely expanding climax, a controlled catastrophe, a sun forged in sound.
Guapo are a trio of musicians from London.
The band's intense live show continues to progress and expand, as the influences heard on the records are thrown into the air and reassembled as an incendiary mixture of plate-spinning dexterity, telepathic instrumental interplay and extreme avant-noise.

 GUAPO / CUNEIFORM RECORDS
Guapo is a British trio that plays an intense music that straddles the boundaries of progressive, noise, minimalism and avant-rock.
As Sound Projector put it, "Guapo come on like all the hellhounds of Magma, Eskaton and Ruins were after them...on a par with Magma’s Kohntarkosz or Univers Zero’s Ceux Du Dehors".
Five Suns is Guapo’s most apocalyptic and dynamically accomplished work to date, bringing a new sense of sonic and spatial awareness to the band's trademark sensibilities of complex song structures, harmonic atonality and percussive mantras.

Guapo: Five Suns: Pitchfork Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Where Guapo differ is in their preference for large-scale symphonic forms and love of sinister, dreadful moments of calm between outbursts.
I get the feeling Guapo really are taking that ball and running with it rather than being content to wallow in its glory-- plus it's instrumental, so you're spared from having to sing about Orks.
Guapo usually keep their ideas concise, so if you don't happen to dig what's going on at any given time, it's likely to change before you even know what's happened.

Guapo: Five Suns - PopMatters Music Review
Guapo frightened me at first: its ominous sludge riffs, dank atmospherics, and Halloween synth tones sound like the soundtrack that the beetle army from The Dark Crystal would play to psych itself up before sacrificing one of the childlike elfin heroes.
Guapo has been compared to other grandiose prog-rock acts like King Crimson, but this trio seems exhausted of ideas before they even begin to paint the canvas fl.
To place them next to contemporary company, Guapo seems to be stuck somewhere between the plate tectonics of Tortoise and the space prog of the Mars Volta.

PROGRESSIVE WORLD: REVIEWS BY MARCELO SILVEYRA
Apparently someone somewhere once said that Guapo resembles Lark's Tongues in Aspic's King Crimson, which is pretty much like comparing Weezer to Slayer, golf to rugby, or picturesque streams to incoming asteroid storms.
Forget the Crimson reference and remember that rock critics tend to categorize every single progressive band on the planet as a bastard child of Yes, Pink Floyd, Rush, or the aforementioned Crimson.
Although the multi-movement "Five Suns"does steam off towards the end and leaves an ever-so-slight trail of disappointment behind, the core of the piece is so obliterating, so perversely sinister, and so unforgiving that the listener can't help but feel a bit of delicious psychosis sinking in and consuming whatever traces of normality struggle to remain.

From their beginnings in 1994 as an experimental post-hardcore trio, Guapo have developed their sound over the course of many records and tours to encompass avant-rock, electronics, folk melodies and jump-cut polyrhythmic precision.
The fourth Guapo CD, "Great Sage, Equal of Heaven" (released spring 2001) sees the core duo of Matt Thompson and Dave Smith taking on board Krautrock, Japanese ethnic music and freeform improvisation, with guest musicians Caroline Kraabel and John Edwards.
Guapo's third album, a CD of hyper-energetic improvised collaborations with japanese legend Ruins and london-based improv duo Shock Exchange.

 el Guapo (X-Statix member)
El Guapo readily accepted and almost as soon as he did, the team was called on a mission to Malaysia.
Guapo then met with Consuela to discuss his membership in the team, claiming that she didn’t have to worry about him dying because he was El Guapo and he was lucky.
When the daughter of the team’s coroner went on a shooting spree, El Guapo, along with the rest of X-Statix were called in to stop her.

Guapo take their prog-rock obessions and unbelievable instrumental prowess to the limit on this new album, a joint release with the almighty Pandemonium label.

El Guapo - Chicago Gigs.com Music Reviews
The bilingual rock quartet El Guapo, which just released a pair of polished peppy melodic hit-copping alterna-rock EPs, may have hit upon a brilliant marketing strategy when they decided to begin splitting their time between English-speaking clubs and the growing local Hispanic rock market.
The three songs on this EP may lack the cleverness and spark of both of the aforesaid groups, but the songs are well-produced, pleasurable listens.
The prospect of a rock album with tracks in two languages garnering widespread success from the American-centric modern rock market is an appealing one to anyone rooting for a national trend toward ethnic integration.

GUAPO Five Suns reviews and MP3
But Since he was quite thorough in his description of the album and i agree with his point of view (bar the 5 stars rating to which I correct to 4 stars).
This is the first album of the toptally different Guapo having lost all of their frontman and only keeping this fabulous duo of Thompson on bass and Smith on drums.
What makes Guapo stand out is that they have taken the original blueprint and made it sound contemporary - they stand up well next to GYBE as well as to Magma.
