The walled city of Guardamar was destroyed by an earthquake in 1829, bringing down with it the castle that used to be its core.
Another result of the earthquake was the evacuation of the former inhabitants of Guardamar closer to the coast, and when they did so, they began planting rows of pine and eucalyptus trees along the coast, which today stand tall and proud and offer not only a beautiful sight but shelter from prevailing winds.

Guardamar del Segura is a town that through the course of its history has been able to take advantage of the natural adversities that have befallen it.
The area, known by the Greeks as Alone, was inhabited by the Iberians as witnessed by the discovery of the Dama de Guardamar at the Cabezo Lucero site, and Moorish remains are visible in a Rábita (religious/fortified outpost delimiting the border with the Christians) that can be found in the area of the town's dunes.
This forced the inhabitants to move to Guardamar's present location closer to the coast, and to design the town so that it could withstand earthquakes.
