"Guardian Unlimited" is part of the Guardian Media Group of newspapers, radio stations, and new media including The Guardian daily newspaper, The Observer Sunday newspaper, and the Manchester Evening News.
All the aforementioned are owned by The Scott Trust, a charitable foundation which aims to ensure the newspaper's editorial independence in perpetuity, maintaining its financial health to ensure it does not become vulnerable to take over by for-profit media groups, and the serious compromise of editorial independence that this often brings.

OJR article: The Guardian of the Web
The Guardian newspaper in London is the second smallest national daily broadsheet with a circulation of 369,482.
The Guardian was founded in 1821 as the Manchester Guardian.
The Guardian's independence was cemented in 1936 when ownership of the paper was transferred to the Scott Trust, a charity that reinvests all profits and leaves all responsibility for the running of the newspaper to the editor -- currently Alan Rusbridger, who has been at the helm since 1995.

The Guardian - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 1983 the paper was at the centre of a controversy surrounding documents regarding the stationing of cruise missiles in Britain that were leaked to the Guardian by civil servant Sarah Tisdall.
The paper consolidated its centre-left stance during the 1970s and 1980s but was both shocked and revitalised by the launch of The Independent in 1986 which competed for a similar readership and provoked the entire broadsheet industry into a fight for circulation.
On 12 February 1988 The Guardian had a significant redesign; as well as improving the quality of its printers' ink, it also changed its masthead to the now familiar juxtaposition of an italic Garamond "The", with a bold Helvetica "Guardian", which remained in use until the 2005 redesign.

The chief executive of Guardian Media Group told a world digital publishing conference today (26 October 2006) that a Guardian Unlimited global home page, focusing on international news, could arrive by January.
Ms McCall said that, in line with the Guardian’s strategy of becoming a leading global voice for liberal thought, the group was planning to increase revenue in the US and soon offer a global home page with a greater focus on international news - although it would predominantly target America.
She added that Guardian Unlimited would also look to develop more home pages focused on specific international territories.

FBI documents shown on BBC Newsnight last night and obtained by the Guardian show that they had earlier sought to investigate two of Osama bin Laden's relatives in Washington and a Muslim organisation, the World Assembly of Muslim Youth (WAMY), with which they were linked.
The FBI file, marked Secret and coded 199, which means a case involving national security, records that Abdullah bin Laden, who lived in Washington, had originally had a file opened on him "because of his relationship with the World Assembly of Muslim Youth - a suspected terrorist organisation".
High-placed intelligence sources in Washington told the Guardian this week: "There were always constraints on investigating the Saudis".
