  The 8th Armoured Brigade, Chapter IV
The 8th Armoured Brigade, the Flails of B Squadron Westminster Dragoons and the AVREs of 82 Assault Squadron Royal Engineers, were to support the 50th (Northumbrian) Division in the assault on the beaches at Arromanches.
The 27th Armoured Brigade continued in action with the l3th/18th Hussars supporting the 6th Airborne Division and the 51st Highland Division in the woody mosquito ridden country East of the Orne while the Staffordshire and the East Riding Yeomanries fought on with the 3rd British Division in some of the costliest fighting of the campaign.
The new line held by 8th Armoured was approximately 15 miles in length along the Maas and the Waal; the troops consisted of the 12th Battalion, King's Royal Rifle Corps, 43rd Reconnaissance Regiment, a squadron of the RAF.

 The Irish Guards - A Brief History, World War II
The 3rd Battalion joined the Guards Armoured Division during the Autumn of 1943 to be one of the Infantry Battalions in the Division and from then until the end of the war they trained with the 2nd Armoured Battalion on the Regiment.
The 2nd and 3rd Battalions landed with the Guards Armoured Division in Normandy in June 1944, and fought with the Division until the end of the war, taking part in the advance from Seine to Nijmegen.
J.O.E. Vandeleur, Commander of the Irish Guards Group led an attack on the bridge over the Meuse-Escaut Canal at De Groote Barrier (which is forever immortalised by the film "A Bridge Too Far'.) This bridge is now known as 'Joe's Bridge' in Honour of his exploits.

The Welsh Guards are the youngest of the foot guards, being raised in 1915.

The Regiment, as the Royal Regiment of Guards, was formed in 1656 by King Charles II who was then in exile in Bruges, Flanders.
It was known as the First Guards later becoming the First Regiment of Foot Guards and now bears the title "The First or Grenadier Regiment of Foot Guards" in honour of the defeat of Grenadiers of the French Imperial Guard at the battle of Waterloo in 1815.

In December 1944 the Welsh Guards had 11 Challengers which would mean that most or all of their 17pdr tanks were Challengers.
The official markings would be the number 45 on a green and blue Arm of Service square divided horizontally with the green section above, and the Guards Armoured divisional sign which was a blue shield with a red border and a white "eye" in the centre of the red section.
Note that the other Regiments in Guards Armoured Division had Shermans with 75mm guns and Fireflies, any photo of a Guards Armoured Division Firefly could be from one of those units.

The 7th Armoured Division, the Desert Rats of North Africa fame, used them as their main equipment with three Armoured Regiments so equipped as well as their Armoured Reconnaissance Regiment, whose intended role was more scouting than combat though they managed their fair share of the latter.
Armoured and the 1st Polish Armoured, all used mainly Shermans of various types but had Cromwells in their Armoured Reconnaissance Regiments.
The style of markings is typical of that used by the 7th Armoured Division in North Africa and the unit continued to use it throughout the NW Europe.
