The international jury of the Prize - composed of jurists, elder statesmen and former heads of state and Nobel Peace Prize laureates - last year honoured both Guatemalan President Alvaro Arzu and Guatemalan guerrilla leader Rolando Moran.
Previous winners were the United Nations High Commission for Refugees and its High Commissioner Sadako Ogata (1995); King Juan Carlos of Spain and former U.S. President Jimmy Carter (1994); Yitzhak Rabin, Shimon Peres and Yasser Arafat (1993); the International Law Academy in The Hague (1992); Nelson Mandela and Frederik W. De Klerk (1991).

However, evangelical Protestants appear to be represented in greater proportion in the Guatemalan Republican Front (FRG), which became the governing party when it won the presidency and a majority in Congress in the winter 1999 elections.
Mejia justified his coup, saying that "religious fanatics" were abusing their positions in the government and also because of "official corruption." Seven people were killed in the coup, although Rios Montt survived to found a political party (the Guatemalan Republic Front) and to be elected President of Congress in 1995 and 2000.

Exceptions to this rule are Alba Estela Maldonado from the Guatemalan Revolutionary Unity / URNG and the General’s daughter, Zury Rios Montt of the Guatemalan Republican Front / FRG who are first on the national list of their respective parties.
Interestingly, at a recent forum for women candidates running for Congress, there was a strong sense of common ground to be covered on the legislative agenda, very decent behaviour indeed on the part of contenders, and a minimum of mudslinging towards fellow candidates — rather unlike the forums held for presidential candidates.
Most of these are low down on the ballot and therefore unlikely to get a seat in Congress.
