Esotericism of the Popol Vuh by Raphael Girard, ch 3
In this view Tepeü and Gucumatz correspond to the sun at its rising and at its setting along the ecliptic, when the star moves through the zenith to form the astronomical cross by crossing the line of parallel with that of the meridian (Girard, Los Chortís, chapter on the Tzolkín).
At the same time and in imitation of the agrarian deities, the Chortí elder puts on his "dress suit," green in color like the divine raiments, and again we see the extremely close linkage between the myth and the ritual that is practiced by the Chortí.
When the elder, called Hor Chan (head of the serpent), puts on his green mantle, he is compared to Gucumatz, the serpent with quetzal feathers; that is, the Agrarian deity of which he is the earthly representative.

The Symbolism of the Mayan Numbers
At early stages, the Maya perceived that the natural events recur in a cyclical manner and that are combined each other according to proportions and numerical parameters.
Tzacol means "Creator", Bitol is the "Former", Alom is the cosmic female progenitor, Cajalom is the cosmic male progenitor, Tepeu means the "Governor", and Gucumatz (Kukulcan, in maya) is the "Plumed Serpent": the Quetzalcoatl of the Toltecs and Mexicas.
It is not required a big effort to reconstruct the essential thinking of the Mayan philosophers that reunited in these six teogonic personalities the visible and comprehensible attributes of an abstract deity revealing its presence.

In the compactness of the Maya-Quiché myth of genesis, the world was engendered by Tepeu, the Lord, with the assistance of Gucumatz, a mythical half-celestial and half-earthly creature represented by the plumed serpent.
