USS Gudgeon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Two ships of the United States Navy have borne the name USS Gudgeon, named in honor of the gudgeon, a small slender European freshwater fish often used as bait.
The first Gudgeon, (SS-211), was a Tambor-class submarine, commissioned in 1941 and lost in 1944.
The second Gudgeon, (SS-567), was a Tang-class submarine, commissioned in 1952 and sold to Turkey and struck from the US Naval Vessel Register in 1987.

On October 25, 1951, the second USS Tang (SS 563) was commissioned and was the first of the modern fast attack submarines and surrogate parent of the U.S. Navy's nuclear power submarine force.
The SS 563's design incorporated the total submerged operation concept from the U.S. Navy's World War II submarine experience as well as the submarine experience of America's enemies.
Gudgeon and Harder were built to a length of 277 feet and with the FM engines as initial installation.

Construction and delivery followed without significant difficulty, but when the boats went to sea in the early 1950s, the new engines did not work well.
Accordingly, in 1957 and 1958, the first four Tangs were lengthened, while Gudgeon and Harder, still in the ways, were built to the new length, with the new engines.
In 1967, Tang (SS-563), Wahoo (SS-565), Gudgeon (SS-567), and Harder (SS-568) received an additional 15-or-18-foot section added to receive the PUFFS passive sonar installation.

Nuclear subs were viewed as too high priced to risk on such dangerous missions.
The authors tell the tale of other prenuclear subs like the USS Gudgeon (SS-567) and USS Growler (SSG-577) as they tangle with Soviet surface combatants off the coast of Vladivostok.
More than the mission is the authors’ ability to convey to the reader the sense of peril these American sailors endured with every depth charge and sonar ping designed to make these early subs surface.
